IMPORTANT NEWS: 2022 COVID Update #2 - Return To School & School Uniform Update

IMPORTANT NEWS: 2022 COVID Update #2 - Return To School & School Uniform Update

Dear Canterbury Families and Staff,

I write today to provide some updates to our learning model and back to school arrangements for Weeks 1 and 2 of the school year.

K – 10 Supervised Learning

As indicated in my previous letter on Tuesday 11 January 2022, we are offering a supervised learning environment at school for Kindy to Year 10 children of essential workers and vulnerable children.

Thank you to those parents and carers who completed the survey indicating your intentions.

Students will be supervised by teachers and learning assistants from their year level on a rotating basis across this two-week period from Monday 24 January – Friday 4 February 2022.

While the formal curriculum will not begin in this time, some revision activities and learning related to the curriculum will be scheduled.

Camp Australia will continue to operate their before and after school care.

Years 11 – 12 Remote Learning

Year 11 and 12 students will commence their remote learning with their class teachers from Monday 31 January – Friday 4 February 2022.

This will be delivered via Teams and OneNote, as we have used in previous lockdowns in 2020-21.

Students will be expected to attend each of their timetabled lessons each day and complete their assigned activities.

They will commence actual coursework during this week of remote learning.

Invitations to these online lessons will be pushed out through Teams, so students can simply enter each lesson from their calendar, as required.

Years 8 – 10 Introductory / Bridging Learning

For students in Years 8 – 10 only, we will also plan some introductory and bridging learning activities in core subjects only for Week 2 from Monday 31 January – Friday 4 February 2022.

This material will be assigned by the class teacher on Teams and OneNote, with summary emails and MyCC posts affirming the work to be done.

There will be no live classes for Years 8 – 10. Rather, the set work will be made available for students to complete at their own pace through the day.

Teachers are of course available through the day to answer questions via Teams and email.

Work will be set for English, Science, Mathematics and History.

For Year 8s, there will also be work for their Language and for PE theory.

For Year 9s, there will be work for PE theory which is set.

Plans Beyond Week 2

Our teachers are using the extra time at the beginning of the year to plan outstanding learning experiences for when ALL students return in Week 3 from Monday 7 February 2022.

It is likely that some or all Student Free Days planned for the remainder of this year will be converted to regular teaching days, as a way of making up the academic time.

If further COVID disruptions to the school year occur, we will continue to re-evaluate as required.

New Students Years 8 – 12

New Years 8 – 12 secondary students are asked to attend a 1:1 Device Tutorial Session at Canterbury’s Orientation Day on Friday 28 January from 8:30am – 10:00am in the Arts Centre Auditorium.

Please use Gates B or C along Easterly Street with plenty of onsite parking very close to the Auditorium. Please see our on-campus map signs when you arrive for the exact building location.

Mr James Jenkins, our Director of Learning and Teaching Innovation, will be helping all new students in Years 8 – 12 navigate our online learning environment, so they can access resources and participate in remote learning.

Air Purification

We are currently attempting to source air purifiers for our Junior School classrooms.

Stock levels of these types of machines are obviously in short supply globally, but we are attempting to secure some stock.

School Uniforms – Full Update

COVID continues to wreak havoc on global and domestic production levels and our transport supply lines, with staff shortages and international customs hold-ups.

This means that our usual uniform shipments that arrive in November or December, in plenty of time for the new school year, have been delayed.

While our new retail partnership with The School Locker and their Loganholme Superstore makes navigating these complex supply chains much easier, there have still been delays to the delivery of many school uniform items.

At present, the following are in short supply and/or delivery has been delayed…

PLEASE NOTE: These dates are our best guide ONLY and deliveries may change daily.
We recommend calling ahead of any personal shop visit to avoid disappointment using the contact details beneath the table.
More stock will be available late next week after Australia Day.

Prep Shirts – These should be instore by this Thursday afternoon 20/1.
Prep Blouses – These could be instore as early as this Friday afternoon 21/1, but should arrive by Tuesday 25/1.
Years 712 Blouses – Stock is significantly delayed beyond our control. We are seeking an alternative white blouse that can be swapped back at no cost, when the proper stock arrives later in February.
Years 712 Grey Skirts – These could be instore as early as this Friday afternoon 21/1, but should arrive by Tuesday 25/1.
Girls Dresses – All sizes available but with low stock, and new stock will only be available later in April.
Years 712 Shirts – Should hopefully be instore by this Friday 21/1.
P4 Formal Navy Shorts – Should hopefully be instore by the end of January: Monday 31/1.
Sport Shorts – Stock is low with no Size 4s and very few Size 6s, but new stock should arrive around early February 4/2. This is mainly just an issue in the smaller Sizes 4-6-8 with an alternative sport shorts for secondary school students.
Girls Socks – Delivery around end of January: Monday 31/1.
Boys Knee High Socks – Should hopefully be instore by this Friday 21/1.
Boys Ankle Socks – Should hopefully be instore by this Friday 21/1.
Checked Culottes – All sizes are available, however Size 8 stocks are low and new stock will only be available later in April.
P4 Boys & Girls Formal Hats – Hoping to be instore by Tuesday 25/1.
Years 512 Boys & Girls Formal Hats – Deliveries not expected until sometime in March.

IMPORTANT NEWS: 2022 COVID Update #1 - Return To School Information

IMPORTANT NEWS: 2022 COVID Update #1 - Return To School Information

Dear Canterbury Families and Staff,

I write today with most, but probably not all, the answers you might be seeking around Canterbury’s approach to the delayed start of the school year, as officially announced by the Queensland Premier over the weekend.

Background

20,566 new COVID cases were confirmed in Queensland over the past 24 hours, adding to the 9,581 new cases in the 24 hours before that, making at least 109,524 currently active confirmed cases in this State.

It’s now best (and safest) to assume every public venue, shopping centre, large office or school either is, or soon will be, experiencing direct COVID contacts, and to manage this situation calmly, responsibly and accordingly – including our own Early Learning Centre and Camp Australia OSHC, which reopened on Tuesday 4 January.

Canterbury will be working with the State Government, Independent Schools Queensland, and our staff, students and parents to restrict and remove COVID’s spread as much as possible from our campus.

With this in mind, please heed our Golden Rule at all times: If you feel unwell, have COVID symptoms, or have tested COVID positive – please stay isolated at home until you have fully recovered and/or have tested negative (where and when testing and timely results are possible).

As always, please visit the Queensland Health Website for the latest detailed guidelines on COVID symptoms, testing, masks, rules and restrictions, health precautions, general advice and case numbers.

Our Return To School Arrangements

  • Onsite campus learning for Prep to Year 12 will now officially commence on Monday 7 February.
  • Remote learning for our Year 11 and 12 students will commence from Monday 31 January for one week, until that revised formal start of the school year. It is not our intention to open up remote learning for other year levels at this stage, although we will reassess after our teaching staff return next week.
NB: Please see ISQ’s explanatory notes at the bottom of this document.
  • We will be offering a supervised learning program onsite at the College campus for Prep to Year 10 students of essential workers, and for vulnerable children, from Monday 24 January to Friday 4 February. The Queensland Government’s definition of essential services workers and vulnerable children will be used to approve places in this program.
  • This will not be the official curriculum, but rather a supervised, age-specific learning program, which creates opportunities for students to be meaningfully engaged. Our intention is for both teachers and learning assistants to supervise this program. A separate email with a survey link will be sent to families soon, allowing us to understand how many students to plan for.

Other Important Information

  • Our Early Learning Centre, Camp Australia Vacation Care, Summer Holidays Fun & Fitness Camps and Taipans Sport Clubs will continue to operate, but with clear instructions to those who are symptomatic or ‘close contacts’ to remain at home.
  • COVID is playing havoc with school uniform production and supply lines both internationally and domestically, meaning delays at our Uniform Shop and affiliated School Locker Superstore in Loganholme for some items – especially the new Prep uniforms. We are monitoring the situation closely and will give confirmed updates when possible. Hopefully, our standing orders are fulfilled by the end of Term One, but Canterbury will be very understanding of the need for students to substitute similar items for a short time.
  • Parents are strongly encouraged to continue collecting Microsoft Surface Pro laptops from our IT Services Office over the coming weeks. So far, dozens of devices have been collected by Year 4, Year 7 and many ‘opt-in’ families.

School Event Impacts

  • Some January and February events, co-curricular activities and gatherings for staff, students and parents will need to be cancelled or postponed as per below:
  • 2022 Music Camp Weekend: Friday 21 – Sunday 23 January – CANCELLED.
    Year 7 Orientation Day:
Friday 21 January – NOW Friday 4 February.
2022 Scholars Ceremony: Friday 28 January – NOW Friday 11 February.
    New Families Welcome Evening:
Friday 28 January – POSTPONED: New Date TBA.
    Year 12 Soiree:
Friday 4 February – POSTPONED: New Date TBA.
    Year 11 Outdoor Education Camp:
Monday 7 – Wednesday 9 February – POSTPONED: New Date TBA.
TAS & JTAS Trimester 1 Saturday Sport:
Rounds 1-2 – LIKELY CANCELLED: Awaiting confirmation from our TAS counterparts.

Other Health Information

  • Masks must be worn indoors at Secondary Schools across Queensland, unless officially or medically exempted, until further notice.
  • From 11.59pm (AEST) Sunday 23 January 2022, mandatory COVID-19 vaccinations will be required for all workers or volunteers delivering a service at a school or early childhood education and care setting. The College has sought evidence from all its staff of their double vaccination status. All staff presenting from 23 January 2022 will be compliant with this Public Health Directive.
  • Deep cleaning will be conducted after hours across our Canterbury campus at all ‘high touch’ areas.
  • Our teachers will also focus on classroom ventilation and assessing where lessons can sometimes be held in open-air, outdoor locations.

Final Comments

We are unfortunately re-entering a time where fluid planning, ambiguity and volatility is again our ‘norm’.

It is likely that some students and staff will need to isolate in the interests of their own health, or their family’s health, or contract COVID and be forced to miss some school days.

I have no doubt that February will see considerable flux in school and event attendances.

So from the outset, I send positive thoughts to you and your loved ones that this outbreak is short-lived, not severe and your health and wellbeing is secure.

Please stay safe and courteous of your fellow Canterbury school families, and hopefully COVID Omicron signals the least harmful and final pandemic virus variant.

Kind regards

Dan Walker

Principal
Canterbury College

Independent Schools Queensland Addendum

School parents should be aware that:

  • The State Government expects a large percentage of the population to be infected and unwell in late January and early February as infections peak.
  • This would likely mean many teaching staff will be unwell, or caring for unwell family members, meaning that a school may not have the staff available on a daily basis to deliver remote learning beyond Years 11 and 12.
  • Many students are also likely to be unwell, or in a house with unwell family members, which may prevent them from participating in remote learning (and then normal on-campus school days later on).
  • A combination of these factors means that remote learning for the full school cohort is most likely unviable to deliver during this peak infections period.
  • Independent schools are expected to be open on 24 January to provide useful supervision for children of essential workers and vulnerable children.
  • State schools will implement staffing arrangements to ensure only the minimum number of staff are onsite during this period. Independent schools might also consider taking this approach, to minimise the risk of having large numbers of staff in the same location at the peak of the virus.

Canterbury College Dominates Logan 2021 ATAR Results

Canterbury College Dominates Logan 2021 ATAR Results

Canterbury’s reputation as an academic powerhouse was further reinforced today, with the release of QTAC’s ATAR results for Queensland’s newly graduated Year 12s.

The Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC) released their Australian Tertiary Admission Rankings (ATAR) this morning, showing 53.4% of Canterbury students achieved an ATAR of 80.00 or above, which equals the Top 20% of the State.

Remarkably, 16% of Canterbury students achieved an ATAR of 95.00 or above, which equals the Top 5% of the State.

College Principal Mr Dan Walker was very proud of the four students from Canterbury who achieved a 99.00 or higher ATAR - previously an OP1.

This achievement underpins the fact that talented and motivated students can achieve results beyond their dreams at Logan’s Canterbury College campus.

Key Canterbury College Results:

  • 5% Students achieved a 99.00 or better ATAR
  • 16% Students achieved a 95.00 or better ATAR
  • 28% Students achieved a 90.00 or better ATAR
  • 53.4% Students achieved an 80.00 or better ATAR
  • 8 Students achieved all As
  • 55% Students achieved only As and Bs in their six subjects
  • 90% Students ATAR eligible
  • 26% Average students achieving an ATAR (or equivalent) of 90.00 or above over the last five years
  • 61 Students awarded a VET qualification of Cert III or higher

image.php?hash=7452ab8d2089ad894684e44a927b4a29045bd3d4

These results come as no surprise to Principal Walker.

“I have remarked all year that Canterbury has more and more brilliant young minds coming through the ranks – and none more so than our cohort of 124 exceptional Class of 2021 students.”

“Parents are initially attracted to our Logan school by the enormous breadth of academic and co-curricular programs on offer - from 15 TAS representative sports to eSports, our Drone Academy and Chess Club – plus the 24 subject options we provide from Year 7.

“But our school mantra is World Ready, so underpinning these ‘all-round’ experiences must be a powerful academic spine, that fosters higher-order thinking, independence and motivation.

“Canterbury has achieved this balance and somewhat counterintuitively, both fields seem to ‘cross pollinate’ one another.

“The more our Year 12s engaged in co-curricular activities like Rock School, TAS sport, Rugby 7s and Netball Academies, Community Service, the Taipans Tutors after-school learning service etc, the better they seemed to perform academically, and the much happier their school days passed.

“So it’s about physical, well-being and spiritual stimulation supercharging their mental or academic performance, rather than these being mutually exclusive.”

image.php?hash=d138a44552e3780f610dade745ecf618b102b093
Mr Walker warmly wishes all this year’s Canterbury Year 12s every success with their hard-earned ATAR results today, and with their further studies, workforce entry or possible gap year in 2022.

Mr Walker is especially pleased the College’s ATAR eligibility percentage - at nearly 90% this year, means the school’s ATAR results are a statistically meaningful snapshot of Canterbury’s outstanding academic culture and performance.

He now calls on all schools to be transparent about their ATAR eligibility percentage, in the interests of fair comparisons being made in public forums.

“A 35% ATAR of 90.00+ at a school with only 50% of its students studying an academic (ATAR) pathway, cannot be reasonably compared with a school where 90% of its students are in an ATAR pathway,” Mr Walker explained.

“Parents out there making important decisions about schools for their children deserve to have ‘apples with apples’ comparisons being made in the public arena."
