Global Studies students at Canterbury are developing the necessary skills that will help them forge their own pathways to personal and professional success, as well as becoming empathetic and critically-literate citizens who are more than equipped to embrace a multicultural, pluralistic, inclusive, democratic, compassionate and sustainable future.

Canterbury is at the forefront of education in this area, by delivering a pragmatic and engaging suite of Global Studies subjects that empower students to gain a scope of transferable processes that assist them in becoming problem-solving citizens. The unique diversity of Global Studies subjects at Canterbury provides many opportunities for students to engage in an exciting range of learning experiences that develop rich critical thinking skills through the exploration of relevant historical issues, geographical challenges, philosophical ideas, understandings of the languages of French, Japanese, Mandarin and Spanish and identifying key interactions between society and the discipline of the law.
Students engage in real-world applications of vital lifelong learning skills where they question, explore, reason, construct legitimate arguments, challenge assumptions and think both logically and creatively.
They work with highly experienced and qualified teachers who are state leaders in the learning areas of Ancient History, Modern History, Geography, Legal Studies, Philosophy and Logic, French, Japanese, Mandarin and Spanish.
Canterbury has established strong connections with organisations such as the Queensland History Teachers’ Association, Bond University, Queensland University of Technology Business School, the Australian Geography Teachers’ Association, the Institute of Modern Languages at the University of Queensland and the Modern Languages Teachers’ Association of Queensland.
Canterbury’s commitment to offering diverse languages is demonstrated through multiple opportunities for students to engage in their Target Language. Canterbury hosts tour students and exchange students from France and Japan. Furthermore, as part of the study tours to Japan, Canterbury uses its relationships with our Sister Schools. In addition, students are also offered opportunities to partake in various state-wide and national Language competitions to ensure they have their level of competency internationally recognised.
The ability to adequately communicate in more than one language is an important twenty-first century skill, one that is essential in participating in a global society.
In addition, according to the QCAA, studying a second language enhances both literacy and numeracy in the first language.
