Mathematics and Commerce

“Mathematics is a unique and powerful intellectual discipline that is used to investigate patterns, order, generality and uncertainty.

It is creative, requires initiative and promotes curiosity in an increasingly complex and data-driven world.”

At Canterbury, the Year 7-10 Mathematics curriculum provides students with essential skills and knowledge in number and algebra, measurement and geometry, and statistics and probability.

The aim is to develop the understanding, fluency, problem-solving and reasoning skills that all students require to participate effectively in the community and the economy.

Students studying Mathematics at Canterbury develop skills that make them world-ready, such as critical and creative thinking, written communication, ICT capability and the ability to collaborate.

Students are encouraged to solve problems efficiently and make informed decisions using mathematics.

Secondary Mathematics

Mathematics assessment comprises a combination of short-response examinations and Problem-Solving and Modelling Tasks (PSMTs).

Examinations are designed to allow students to respond to a range of simple to complex questions in both familiar and unfamiliar contexts with and without the use of technology.

A PSMT offers students the opportunity to investigate real-world applications of mathematics by formulating ideas, solving given problems, evaluating results, and communicating solutions.

Tasks can range from analysing trends in house prices and designing games to modelling traffic data and rollercoasters.

Mathematics teaching and learning at Canterbury incorporates a blended learning approach, where digital technologies and online platforms including OneNote, Cambridge HOTmaths and Desmos are utilised to enhance the learning experience for all students and cater to a variety of ability levels.

Teachers demonstrate their expertise and passion for the subject to engage all students in the learning process and deliver outstanding lessons.

Learning goals are clearly communicated and expectations of students are high in taking ownership for their own learning.

Students undertake formative assessment and receive regular feedback on their progress to encourage improvement in attainment, while teachers are in contact with parents and caregivers to involve them in the process.

Numerous extension opportunities are offered through extracurricular activities, such as competitions – including the annual Australian Mathematics Competition, Maths Olympiads, Interhouse Maths Teams Challenge, and the regional Interschool Maths Teams Challenge, which is hosted each year by Canterbury College.

The dedicated Canterbury Mathematics faculty teachers offer a comprehensive tutorial schedule throughout the week, for students to seek additional support and extension outside of class time.

“Without mathematics, there’s nothing you can do.

Everything around you is mathematics.

Everything around you is numbers.”
