Homestay Families

International students will live with carefully-selected homestay families who are committed to their care and wellbeing. Many of these families have children attending Canterbury.

Our homestay families make sure that each student experiences every facet of the Australian lifestyle, through family meals, day trips and conversation.

Students will gain an understanding of Australian culture and will be able to practise their English in a relaxed, supportive family atmosphere.

Homestay families will:
  • provide a caring and supportive environment and treat the student as one of their own family members
  • provide a comfortable, clean room for each student that can be considered their private space. The room will be well ventilated, be adequately lit, and will have a comfortable bed with clean linen, a wardrobe, a desk and a chair for study
  • provide three nutritious meals a day and snacks as required
  • provide transport to and from the College each day and be located within a reasonable distance of the College

A Homestay Testimonial: the Freeman Family

“We currently host two students, Grace and Jason, who are siblings and in Years 9 and 11 at Canterbury.

We have always wanted to know more about other cultures and how we all interact in society and this is a perfect way for not only the students to get to know the Australian way of life, but for us to get to know theirs.

Though we don’t call them our students. We call them our children. We always joke around about being their new temporary mum and dad. Dinner time is the best as we all sit down together to have a laugh and chat about our day.

We have a 13 month old daughter and find that as our homestay children have been with us for almost a year, they have gotten to watch her grow as well. Now we feel like we have 3 children instead of 1.

Even when Grace and Jason go home, we know that we will stay in touch and always cherish the memories we have made together.”

Blue Cards

Queensland has strict laws relating to the protection of children and all homestay families must be screened by the Queensland Government and hold a Working With Children Blue Card.
