Introducing Canterbury College's NEW Chaplain: Father Dan Talbot
Dear Canterbury Community,
I am pleased to announce that Father Dan Talbot has been appointed as our new full-time College Chaplain.
He will commence at Canterbury on Monday 3 July 2023.
Father Dan is currently the Rector of the Jimboomba Anglican Church, where he has served since 2007.
He is also the Area Dean of the Logan area, a position he will continue to hold as Canterbury’s new Chaplain.
Father Dan holds a Bachelor of Business, Graduate Diploma in Theology, Master of Arts in Theology and a Certificate in Clinical Pastoral Education.
He is also a Level 2 Sports Trainer, accredited with the NRL.
Father Dan has served as the Deputy Chair of the St Hilda’s School Board since 2011 and previously as a part-time Chaplain for the Logan Police District.
He has also been a part-time Pastor at Emmaus College in Jimboomba since 2007.
It is certainly the case that Father Dan is no stranger to us here at Canterbury; as he has presided over various chapel services for us over the past few years.
His authenticity, integrity and genuine connection to our area will be wonderful assets as he steps into this important role.
He is excited to play a role in our Religious and Values Education (RaVE) Program and being a voice of inclusion - connecting students of all faith perspectives together, into a reflective community based on our shared values.
I am pleased to share that Father Dan’s appointment was approved with enthusiasm by the Right Rev. John Roundhill, Bishop of the Southern Region, and by the Right Rev. Cam Venables, Bishop Administrator.
Having come to know Father Dan very well over the past four years, I feel very blessed that he sees his next calling to be part of our Canterbury Community.
Father Dan will continue to serve his parish and take some long service leave before commencing with us on Monday 3 July.
However, I’m sure we will see him ‘cameo’ at Canterbury between now and then.
We also sincerely thank Reverend Melusi Sibanda for his time and wonderfully warm presence here at Canterbury College, and we wish him all the best!

Years 11 & 12 Visual Art Excursion | Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA) & Queensland Art Gallery (QAG)
Our Years 11 and 12 Visual Art students visited the Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA) and Queensland Art Gallery (QAG) over at Southbank last Thursday.
They viewed the Air exhibition at GoMA, as well as the general collection and Looking Out, Looking In exhibitions at the QAG.
These exhibitions offered an exciting mix of contemporary and older artworks, from both Australia and overseas, and were very inspirational to our students.
The excursion timing was perfect as they prepare to produce their own artworks and give theoretical appraisals of the works produced by other artists.
It was a valuable experience for our budding artists, and connects directly with their explorations as 'artist and audience' for their units Art As Lens and Art As Knowledge.

Here is your weekly wrap-up of our TAS Round 8 and Junior TAS Round 7 results from Saturday at Home against Cannon Hill Anglican College...
It was a very hot and tough last regular season round, but it prepared us for a great Finals Round this coming weekend.
Huge congratulations to Nissanpal from our TAS Cricket team who took 5 wickets for only 4 runs off just 5 overs!
This included a hat-trick and he also made 38 runs not out when batting! 🤩
The draw for our Finals Round will be released by Wednesday morning on MyCC. 📆📍
So please keep an eye out, as all schools will be hosting different fixtures.

Junior School Weekly Wrap Up | Term 1, Week 8
What a wonderful week we enjoyed in the Junior School with many events, starting the week with our annual Foundation Day Chapel and Cursus Magnus relay race.
We also had the Junior TAS Swimming Carnival, Year 6 Camp, NAPLAN, a Year 2 excursion to the Beenleigh Historical Village, a Year 1 excursion to the Kingston Butter Factory, more Rock And Water and The Sacred Sister Project sessions, plus a Bridge Builders parent session.
Congratulations to all our students who worked hard and pushed themselves outside their comfort zones, and participated enthusiastically in this week’s events.
Also, thank you to our staff that left their families and children to attend and support these events.
This afternoon we welcomed back our Year 6 adventurers from their Outdoor Education experience.
I was privileged to join them on Wednesday and Thursday, and was impressed with their maturity and willingness to try all the challenges they were presented with.
Prospective Prep 2024, 2025, 2026 And Beyond Parent Information Evening
At 6pm next Monday 20 March we are holding our very first Prep 2024, 2025, 2026 And Beyond Parent Information Evening.
The aim of the evening is to provide families with information about the Canterbury Prep program and the years beyond, to assist families with decision-making and planning.
Prep 2024 is currently almost completely full, there are still a few places in 2025, some places in 2026, and the possibility of limited places for 2027.
If you have not applied for your child’s younger siblings, please complete the Enrolment Application to ensure you don’t miss out on places.
Technology
In our recent visit by Senior Constable Mitch Collins from the Eden’s Landing Police Beat, to present the THINK U KNOW Child Online Safety Program to students, as well as a parent session, we received advice about best practices to keep our students safe.
So we have reviewed and updated some of our current policies and procedures.
I sent a letter earlier this week outlining the changes to our Mobile Phone Policy (Acceptable Use of Mobile Phone, SIM-enabled and Electronic Devices Policy) after being given this advice.

Year 2 History Excursion | Beenleigh Historical Village & Museum
Today our Year 2 students visited the Beenleigh Historical Village and Museum - specifically The Village.
This excursion was organised to support the learning that has taken place in their Humanities and Social Sciences (HaSS) lessons - where currently they are comparing life in the past to the present. 💡🧐🤔
The students explored the village in small groups and were able to see what life was like in earlier days.
They also watched the following demonstrations:
- A blacksmith at work 🔨
- Old time crosscut pull sawing 🪚
- A printing workshop 📰
- The Loganholme One Teacher School - featuring good manners in days past, and the tools and methods used by one teacher conducting classes across different year levels. 🧑🏫

Australia's Big Science Competition | Expressions Of Interest OPEN NOW!
In 2023, Australian Science Innovations are again running their annual Big Science Competition.
If you're an aspiring young scientist or engineer, you can test your skills against students from across the state and country, in this 50-minute, multiple-choice competition testing science knowledge, critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
Questions are set in real-life, contemporary contexts, making them relatable (and interesting)!
The test will be held sometime between Monday 15 - Friday 26 May 2023.
