Canterbury High Tea Fundraiser: Breast Cancer Awareness Month – Pink Lady Event Wrap

Canterbury High Tea Fundraiser: Breast Cancer Awareness Month – Pink Lady Event Wrap

This day last week, we hosted our very successful SOLD OUT Canterbury High Tea Fundraiser at our College’s Trade Training Centre Restaurant for Breast Cancer Awareness Month – an official ‘Pink Lady Event’ registered with the Breast Cancer Network Australia organisation.

A big ‘thank you’ to our 65 parents, community members, staffers and special guests who attended, and to our Year 11 Hospitality students who catered, with a wide range of delicious cakes and slices, scones with jam and cream, savouries, sandwiches and fruits, as well as summer mocktails, tea and coffee.

Our guest speaker was Canterbury’s very own Director of Student Futures Ms Bre Ramsay-Orr – herself a cancer survivor – who detailed her personal experiences with her family’s ongoing hereditary battle with breast cancer, surgery, recovery, a lifetime of medication, and how the love of her three children keeps her positive.

It was certainly a very powerful presentation and really brought home why everyone was attending the morning tea fundraiser which raised around $1,300.

Canterbury hosted one of these fundraisers with their Hospitality students a few years ago, and likewise it was very successful, so this may well become an annual event.

Breast Cancer Network Australia is an extremely worthwhile organisation and cause, which offers support to the 57 Australians diagnosed with breast cancer every single day!

Exciting Announcement: Year 4, 5 AND 6 Science In 2022

Exciting Announcement: Year 4, 5 AND 6 Science In 2022

By College Principal Mr Dan Walker

We are always seeking to continually strengthen our academic offerings to our students.

So in 2022, our Year 4 students will have a specialist Science lesson each week, delivered by a specialist primary Science teacher.

And in 2022, our Year 5 and 6 students will have two periods of Science per week, delivered by a specialist middle school Science teacher.

In both cases, this will be real Science, with both test-style and project and practical assessment, delivered in a Science laboratory.

A love of Science, underpinned by a strong conceptual knowledge and a love of 'hands-on learning', fuels a passion in Mathematics, Engineering, Design and IT for our students in the older age groups.

We are very much looking forward to seeing the Year 4-6 Science program in operation next year.

My hope is that plenty of dinner table conversations about wonderful topics such as: living things, ecosystems, the earth's surface and forces, natural and processed materials, the properties of matter, life cycles, the solar system, light, extreme weather events and electrical circuits, are the result.

More information about our Science program will be delivered at parent information nights and through MyCC in 2022.

THIS Friday NOT A Public Holiday For Canterbury College

THIS Friday NOT A Public Holiday For Canterbury College

This Friday 29 October 2021, the Brisbane Local Government Area is finally enjoying their COVID-postponed Ekka Show Public Holiday.

However, Canterbury College operates within the Logan Local Government Area and we already enjoyed our Ekka Show Public Holiday back on Monday 9 August 2021 around lockdown time.

So we are open as per normal and operating all classes as per normal this Friday.

No ‘double dipping’ out Logan way sorry, BUT we can enjoy the lighter commuter traffic on Friday going to and from our school! (Always look on the bright side).

PS: Friday also happens to be World Teachers Day so we can all be here to thank our wonderful teachers in person during the day! :-)

2021 All Schools Touch Football Tournament Wrap: Wed 6 – Sun 10 Oct

2021 All Schools Touch Football Tournament Wrap: Wednesday 6 – Sunday 10 October

Canterbury College re-joined the All Schools Touch Football Competition in 2021 for an action-packed five-day event, involving 424 teams playing nearly 2,000 games, and bringing around 6,500 junior athletes, coaches and referees to the beautiful Gold Coast.

The Canterbury Taipans were represented by our Under 13 and Under 15 Girls Teams coached by Mr Boon and Mr Enelaki, as well as our Under 18 Mixed Team coached by Mr Sione.

Across a number of pool games, the Under 13 Girls Team played some wonderful touch and won three and lost three of their games, while the Under 15 Girls won two of their six games, both coming in confident fashion on Day Two.

The Under 18 Mixed Team bounced back from a first-up loss, to progress through the pool stages undefeated, and qualify for the Top 16 - playing Our Lady’s from Dalby and just losing narrowly 6-5.

It was a very positive return to the All Schools scene, and one that was characterised by the happy faces and positive efforts by all our students who participated.

NB: Some really great Canterbury Taipans tournament match photos were taken by Sarah Boon Photography and posted to her Facebook Page here.
