Checking in on Canterbury’s 2022 Australian Space Design Competition Crew with Mr Baber…

Checking in on Canterbury’s 2022 Australian Space Design Competition Crew with Mr Baber…

Background Briefing:

The year is 2043… (almost 2046 Mr B)

You work for a company that builds spaceships, and you’ve received a new contract to build a new space settlement that orbits Earth.

Your company has various departments…

Maybe you are looking after the interior and exterior features of the settlement?

Maybe it’s your job to provide for the wellbeing of the residents living in the settlement?

How will they entertain themselves? How will they stay safe and healthy? How will the settlement look after food, water and power for its residents?

Perhaps you need to describe just how the settlement should be constructed, and determine what materials are needed?

Perhaps you need to design machines for the settlement – cranes, jigs, robots etc?

Or maybe you are looking after the costs of the job?

How much do the workers earn? How much do construction materials cost?

The Australian Space Design Competition (ASDC) puts you in a team where you are designing a space settlement from top to bottom.

There is no activity more sci-fi than the ASDC!

For more information, please contact Mr Jason Baber -

‘Hold It’ Redesign Project

‘Hold It’ Redesign Project

From Canterbury’s Creative Industries (Design) Faculty…

Here are Ashlyn Dinsdale's, Rory Walker's and Alex Arbuthnot's 'Hold It' assessment folios.

‘Hold It’ is a special redesign project which challenges students to improve an item that they hold.

Our students investigated ergonomics and semantics, with the goal of improving the user experience and understanding of a product of their choice.

Years 3 - 6 Disco

Years 3 - 6 Disco

On Friday 3 June 2022, we held our Junior School Disco for students in Years 3 – 6.

The disco had a professional DJ, bubbles, a smoke machine, conga lines and a kaleidoscope of lights. The dancing was high energy, with water breaks in between. It was a night to remember!

Seeking Junior School Football (Soccer) + Basketball Coaches!

Have you ever thought about coaching a junior football (soccer) or basketball team?

Want to get involved in the buzz of Saturday morning sport and fun weekly training sessions?

How about guiding the fitness and skills of young eager players?

Canterbury’s Junior School needs parents or past students to coach their Junior TAS Football (Soccer) and Basketball teams for next term!

Pre-season training actually begins THIS WEEK on Thursday afternoons (9 June and 16 June) before moving to Wednesday afternoons (3:30pm – 4:45pm) and Friday mornings (7:00am – 8:00am) during Term 3 itself.

Of course, there are also the games on Saturday mornings at various home and away school venues.

If you are interested, please contact our Head of HPE & Sports (Prep - Year 6) Mr Ben Maxfield to discuss further -

Your help would be hugely appreciated with some really keen kids wishing to play both popular sports!

2022 Scholastic Junior School Book Fair!

2022 Scholastic Junior School Book Fair!

Dear Parents & Carers,

I am happy to announce the Scholastic Junior School Book Fair is back at Canterbury in 2022.

Starting THIS Wednesday 8 June and concluding THIS Monday 13 June, our primary students will be able to create a wishlist based on all the great titles available and on display to purchase these books.

The Discovery Centre Junior Library will be open beyond normal school hours from 8:00am - 8:45am and from 3:15pm - 4:00pm during Book Fair school days, for wishlist orders, book collections and processing payments via cash or EFTPOS.

Online ordering is also available this year.

Stationery can be purchased at the main lunch break from 1:30pm – 2:15pm.

Each Book Fair is designed to give children access to more books they want to read, from relevant new-releases to classic award-winners.

As your children grow, Book Fairs make it easy to ensure their home libraries grow with them.

Yours in reading,

Anita Pendreigh
Teacher Librarian

Canterbury Alumni Network logo

ITEM ONE: NEW HEAD HONCHOS!

BIG congratulations to…

Will Glass – Class Of 2017: Our NEW CAN Committee President.

Rohan Cornick – Class Of 2017: Our NEW CAN Committee Vice President.

They say ‘History Never Repeats’ but these two gents were also Canterbury’s 2017 College Captain and College Vice-Captain in the same order!

They join fellow same graduation year alumnus…

Kevin Tam – Class Of 2017: Our NEW(ish) CAN Committee Secretary.

Please support our new ‘Trio Bellissimo’ as they take our fast-growing past students ‘Alumni Army’ forward, with special thanks to outgoing retirees: Warick Fawkes (President), Jenna Bilston (Vice President) and Rikki Regeling (Secretary).

ITEM TWO: CALL OF DUTY!

Will, Rohan and Kevin - as their first official point of order - have asked for more past students to join the Canterbury Alumni Network Committee:

  • To attend Tuesday night CAN Meetings once per term in the Canterbury Board Room.
  • OR even via Zoom Meetings!
  • To help with the 5 & 10 Year / 20 Year / 30 Year reunion dates and locations, plus new event plans.
  • To bring fresh ideas and energy to the table (literally), with natural attrition meaning new members are required to replace those few who’ve sadly moved interstate for work or left for personal reasons etc.
  • It really is a fun sociable group with highly enjoyable Term meetings that feature genuine snack-fests!

If this sounds like you, please make yourself known on our CAN Private Facebook Group Page - (16) Canterbury College Official Alumni Network | Facebook AND tagging our three new alumni ‘bigwigs’ or simply email – – and we can pass the message on…

ITEM THREE: REUNION PLANNING

The CAN Committee wishes to hold the 5 & 10 Year / 20 Year / 30 Year Reunions across July – August – September this year. Thank heavens COVID reunion planning havoc finally seems to be over – Amen!

So… we are seeking YOUR location suggestions, to allow us to start making some serious event bookings and placing some deposits.

Last Year: Norman Park Community Bowls Club – 5 & 10 Year Reunion | Bar Pacino (CBD Riverside) – 20 Year Reunion | Sirromet Winery – 30 Year Reunion.

New ideas please! Felons Brewing Co. (Howard Smith Wharves)? The Fox Hotel (South Brisbane)? Brisbane Powerhouse (New Farm)? Sirromet again?

If you wish to make a suggestion, please make it on our CAN Private Facebook Group Page - (16) Canterbury College Official Alumni Network | Facebook AND tagging our three new alumni ‘bigwigs’ or (again) simply email – – and we can pass the message on…
