New + Improved Canterbury College Phone Line Menu Options & Ranking

New + Improved Canterbury College Phone Line Menu Options & Ranking

Dear Parents & Carers,

Here at Canterbury College we are always striving to improve our communications with you, based on your feedback to us.

And one simple service, that we know has been a source of some frustration, is our automated phone line menu options and their ranking.

We have listened to your feedback, and consulted with our front desk staff, customer service staff and admin teams, to simplify and reorder the options presented to you, when you call in for assistance.

Our new phone menu below now reflects the actual ‘real world’ volume and types of incoming calls – starting with the most common request up front, then cascading down from there.

This will save you time on the phone waiting for your most likely call option to come up.

The new system was implemented on Wednesday this week, so please email us if you experience any problems or errors over the phone, with these revised menu options –

Thank you for your patience while we worked through this college-wide project.

And we remain only too happy to help you over the phone with anything you might need, or any questions you might have!

Kind regards

Canterbury As An Anglican School | Some Important Considerations

Canterbury As An Anglican School | Some Important Considerations

When parents or carers are choosing a school for their children, I understand that the 'religiosity' of the school does not hold the same level of importance for everyone.

Across society, the number of families identifying as 'religious' and/or regularly attending church, is steadily declining.

Interestingly though, enrolments in faith-based independent schools of all religious denominations however, continue to increase every year.

What are we to make of this?

Could it be, that families are comfortable with faith-based values within independent schools, but not necessarily the institution of the 'Church' itself?

Anglican schools in Queensland have a reputation as strong academic schools.

Anglican schools, like Canterbury, also take a principled stance that 'the whole student' is developed, and an emphasis on character education, service and leadership is also apparent.

Anglican schools do attempt to deliver a practical 'manifestation' of gospel stories around compassion, servant leadership, hope, integrity and respect.

Indeed, some of these values and stories are represented in Canterbury's stated 'Values' as a school.

The Anglican Church welcomes the traditions and stories from across Christian faiths and non-Christian faiths alike.

People of all faith positions are invited to worship and reflect alongside each other.

In fact, there is a strong emphasis - even in Canterbury's Religious and Values Education (RaVE) program - about understanding both Christianity and major world religions, including their similarities and differences.

I am encouraged that families from Sikh, Hindu, Buddhist, Muslim and many other backgrounds, find a comfortable home here at Canterbury.

I know our new College Chaplain, Father Dan Talbot, will be encouraging all faith traditions to share their stories and worship practices.

This is a great strength of our school, and sits comfortably within the embracing and inclusive Anglican Church in Queensland more broadly.

Our annual St John's Cathedral City Service was very well-attended this year and the number of students coming forward for a blessing was lovely to see.

We also know that many families would like their children to have opportunities to be confirmed and receive communion.

We are certainly working towards creating opportunities for these Anglican traditions to be offered to our community - staff, alumni, students and parents.

But this will always be absolutely up to each family - we do not pressure stakeholders about such matters.

However, we do ask for a mindful and reflective attitude and outlook from all our students.

I do encourage all our students to take part with open hearts and open minds in our regular chapel services throughout the year.

Sometimes a chapel service may not have a great spiritual significance to a young person.

But... it is a perfect opportunity for some quiet time - to slow down and reflect on thoughts more generally.

It is also important to learn more about both Christian faith and the faiths of other churches around the world.

Our mantra of 'Different Together' makes us stronger and more 'World Ready' and this is our overall objective for Canterbury students.

Mr Dan Walker
College Principal

2023 Annual Canterbury College St John's Cathedral City Service | Photos Now Available

Our Years 5-12 students attended our Annual Canterbury St John's Cathedral City Service this morning on a beautiful sunny winter's day.

The service was celebrated by the Right Reverend John Roundhill - the Bishop for the Southern Region of the Anglican Church of Southern Queensland.

He was assisted at the altar by Canterbury's new College Chaplain Father Dan Talbot.

St John's Anglican Cathedral itself is an awe-inspiring worship space, and is regarded as the 'mother church' for all Anglicans in Queensland.

More photos from this morning's service will be posted on our Facebook Page shortly.

Year 8 Mandarin Class: Today's Dumpling Making Lesson | Story & Photos

Year 8 Mandarin Class: Today's Dumpling Making Lesson | Story & Photos

Our Year 8 Mandarin students swapped their pens and pencils for pots and pans this morning, to create their very own dumplings!

This Term 3, as part of their study unit on Leisure Time, our students are learning about the regular activities that Chinese people do.

In China, families often hand-make dumplings together on special occasions, and in their spare time, as this dish symbolises unity and wealth.

Our students assembled their dumplings with a filling made from minced pork, cabbage, shallots, ginger, garlic, soy sauce, salt, sugar, chicken powder and sesame oil.

The dumplings were then rapidly boiled in water and students were able to enjoy a taste of their hard work.

This incursion helped foster a deeper appreciation for Chinese culture and was a great blend of education and culinary delight!

Year 9 Impact With Engineering Talk | University Of Queensland Special Presentation

Year 9 Impact With Engineering Talk | University Of Queensland Special Presentation

Last Thursday, the University of Queensland's (UQ) Women In Engineering Faculty gave an Impact With Engineering presentation to our Year 9 students.

The talk discussed various Science pathways and the impact the students could have if they pursued STEM: Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths subjects.

Our Year 9s learnt that being a scientist was much more than just wearing a white lab coat, working in a laboratory, and doing lots of equations.

These days it means working as part of a team, envisioning and creating innovative and effective solutions - such as feeding the starving, constructing replacement human limbs, addressing climate change, assembling next-generation robots, and developing needle-free vaccines.

They also shared with our students the various focus areas within engineering itself - Advanced Manufacturing, Built Environment, Digital Design & Technology, Energy, Environment, Health, Resources & Space, and more.

Potential jobs available in the industry and what student life is really like at UQ was also covered.

Employment vacancies across STEM positions are growing faster than in any other field, and we want to foster problem-solving, creativity, analytical and critical thinking, and strong communication skills, to allow all of our students to excel and be World Ready.
