SEQ Rugby 7s School Girls Competition Friday Wrap
SEQ Rugby 7s School Girls Competition Friday Wrap
A big effort from our girls teams, representing 32 Canterbury students, at the South-East Queensland Rugby 7s School Girls Competition, held at the Redcliffe Rugby Union Club last Friday.
Against a very strong and huge regional field of Brisbane, Logan and Gold Coast area schools, our U13, U15 and U18 girls teams all finished in third place!
We were the only SEQ independent school to jag top three finishes in every age group, which shows how quickly our Rugby 7s Academy is taking shape, and the benefit of our Year 9 and 10 curriculum subject.
Canterbury player Fleur Ginn (pictured) was even named the U15 Player of the Tournament.
Our goal is to be the top independent school in SEQ for Girls Rugby 7s.
Great job everybody!

How Do You Get Involved?
Canterbury students and staff can sign up via MyCC or Teams using the weblink within the article.
It’s FREE to sign up, but you will need to raise money prior to September 16 if you wish to participate fully at school.

Youth Theatre Sports: Junior & Senior Secondary Competitions
Recently, Canterbury’s Junior (Years 7-9) and Senior (Years 10-12) Secondary Theatre Sports Teams participated in the Youth Theatre Sports Competition, hosted at local area schools.
Both teams had their respective audiences laughing, as they navigated their way through improvised acts, where the scenarios were only given to them literally seconds beforehand.
Such a fun event for all involved!
Thanks to Mrs Kirk for your work with these teams.
So students, if you have a passion for Secondary Drama, and a flair for Theatre Sports, please search our MyCC under Co-Curricular / Performing Arts / Drama / Theatre Sports.

LAST CALL: United Nations Day: THIS THU 26 AUG – ‘Around The World’ Videos
LAST CALL: United Nations Day: THIS THU 26 AUG – ‘Around The World’ Videos
When your family gets together tonight, how about this for a fun family project?
UPDATE: We've received FIVE smartphone video entries so far but would LOVE to see some more!
DEADLINE EXTENDED: 8am THIS Wednesday 25 August 2021.
--------------------
It’s estimated we have around 80-90 cultures and between 50-60 languages proudly represented right here at Canterbury!
Now COVID restrictions have forced the cancellation of our major campus-wide multicultural event on Thursday 26 August – which is very disappointing.
BUT… instead of accepting total defeat, we still want to celebrate United Nations Day digitally, by assembling a student-made video montage, showcasing as many different Canterbury cultures as possible.
The idea is simple AND easy…
We are asking our students just to video some of their home life culture for us on their smartphones…
That’s it!
Maybe you or your parents prepare some special international dishes, or you have a recipe passed down through the generations that leads back to another homeland…
Maybe you or your parents have some traditional clothing from another culture that you can wear and show us…
Is there artwork or interesting objects around your house from a foreign country with special significance?
You might even have some family customs or prayers or habits or superstitions you would like to share...
How about some of your foreign language or singing? But with an English translation afterwards please.
Get your family involved in the filming and have some fun – there are no hard or fast rules.
Just please explain what we are seeing in your video – what culture it’s from and the background behind it.
If you can add traditional music from your culture in the background even better.
All we need is about 1-2 minutes of smartphone video in LANDSCAPE orientation please.
The best videos will be compiled together to make our Canterbury ‘Around The World’ Video that will be shared across our College comms channels on United Nations Day: Thursday 26 August 2021.
Please email your videos by 8am THIS Wednesday 25 August 2021 to
Thank you!
Dirrum Festival Recording - Nathaniel Harris & Briana Dinsdale
Dirrum Festival Recording - Nathaniel Harris & Briana Dinsdale
Today, Mr Chris Nield – our Director of Student Development, was at the Canterbury recording for this year’s Dirrum Festival.
Dirrum Dirrum is the sound of red in the Ngunnawal language: the colour of blood and earth.
Dirrum Dirrum is a way of seeing others and ourselves bound in a respectful relationship, standing in a wide circle of compassionate engagement.
It acknowledges a common ground and is an active choice for life beyond the smallness of self-interest.
The Dirrum Festival is a social justice festival run primarily by students.
The event reflects a culture of engagement rather than a weekend or ‘island’ of isolated activity.
Out of this engagement and history of service to the ‘common good’, young leaders speak alongside inspirational speakers from around the world.
It’s been hosted down in Canberra for the last 10 years and was starting in Brisbane this year… Until the COVID restrictions hit. Curse you again ‘rona’!
Therefore, it’s being recorded instead and will be available later this year.
Canterbury had two students performing - Nathaniel Harris and Briana Dinsdale.
Nice job team!
Years 6 & 11 'Student Bridge': The Campus Connections Program
https://youtu.be/tOZoqyL0lOQ
Canterbury Campus Connections Program Summary
The Campus Connections Program is intended to serve as a ‘bridge’ between members of each Canterbury House in Year 6, and their counterparts in Year 11, who will be the Senior Leaders upon their advancement to the Secondary campus.
It will initially be held on two occasions early in Term 3 during August (DONE), after which it will be assessed with a view to more frequent meetings in the future.
Wellbeing Blueprint
This program is intended to primarily address the Social and Emotional dimensions of the Canterbury Wellbeing Blueprint, however it may include support for students in all other dimensions.
Canterbury Values
The program will primarily support the Canterbury Values of Community, Compassion and Respect.
Objectives
The primary objectives of the Campus Connections Program are as follows:
- Build relationships between the Junior and Senior School campuses.
- Allow rising Year 7 students to meet their future Student Leadership Group and develop personal relationships with rising Year 12 students which will remain after graduation.
- Reduce concern and build excitement among Year 6 students for their future advancement to Secondary School.
- Foster House identity and pride by developing a sense of belonging and understanding of House Values.
- Provide Year 11 students with opportunities to demonstrate leadership, both for their own personal growth and to support their involvement in the student leadership application process.
Responsible Staff
The program will be supervised by the six Year 11 Wellbeing Teachers, however Year 11 students will be leading the program.
Year 6 Teachers, the Head and/or Deputy Head of Junior School will be responsible for preparing and, where necessary, debriefing the Year 6 students.
Dates
Meetings will take place during Year 11 Wellbeing lessons in Period 3 from 10:50am - 11:45am on Thursdays.
If the program progresses into 2022, a common time for Year 6 classes should be programmed to coincide with Year 11 Wellbeing classes.
Year 11 students will prepare their programs during the final few Wellbeing lessons of Term 2.
Program Details
- It will connect Year 11 and Year 6 students to do activities together, organised by the Year 11 students.
- Activity specifics are to be left deliberately open-ended, to allow maximum input from Year 11 students.
- Houses should develop their own objectives in accordance with their own House Values and Culture.
- Year 6 students will lead their classes to an agreed meeting point at 10:50am to meet their Year 11 counterparts.
- The Year 11s, under the supervision of their Wellbeing teacher, will lead the Year 6s to their classroom or another appropriate location to run the activities.
- Activities in the initial weeks are expected to include an element of ‘getting to know you’ type activities.
- Year 11 students will plan their activities in the final weeks of Term 2, creating a document detailing the activities, responsible students, procedures and equipment needed, and present them to their teacher.
- Year 11 students will conduct a debrief session during the week following the program, to determine which activities worked, opportunities for future meetings and to reflect on their performance.
- Feedback will also be sought from Wellbeing Teachers, Heads of House, Year 6 Teachers and Admin, and Year 6 students on the effectiveness of the program and possibilities for future experiences.
Progression
When approval is received by Heads of House and Head of Secondary, an incursion pack will be completed.
Upon successful completion of the first two Campus Connections dates, further dates will be identified and arranged if agreed by Heads of House, Head of Secondary and Head of Junior School.
