Canterbury’s Very Own Elite Skating Athlete – Caitlyn Peck

Canterbury’s Very Own Elite Skating Athlete – Caitlyn Peck

Caitlyn Peck has been Artistic Skating since 2013 at the age of 9-years-old.

She moved quickly through the elementary ranks and stormed into advanced competition.

Caitlyn currently represents Australia at international competitions.

She competed in her first National Championship in Adelaide during 2015 where she skated in the Juvenile Grade.

At the 2016 Nationals in Victoria's Dandenong, Caitlyn won the compulsory figures event and has continued to do so at every State, National and International competition she has participated in!

Even after advancing to the Cadet Grade (one year ahead of age requirements), she was still able to win ALL of her figure events - including a gold for Australia at the Oceania Championships - a competition primarily for Pacific Region nations.

Caitlyn has also been consistently placing in the Top 4 in the dance events at these same competitions.

Unfortunately in October 2017, Caitlyn ruptured her ACL during a morning break at school, and had to sit out for the remainder of the 2017, and most of the 2018 skating season.

Despite not being medically cleared for competition, she was able to do plenty of 'off skates' work and rehabilitation, plus work toward some proficiency tests (belts and stripes) in martial arts.

Competing in two artistic skating disciplines (dance and figures) at such a high level leaves little time for Caitlyn to work on her proficiencies.

But her injury-forced time off enabled a good opportunity to dedicate time to these, and Caitlyn was able to gain all remaining silver proficiencies and only has her gold ones left to go.

The knee injury has inspired Caitlyn to help others recover from their injuries and prevent future injury as well, and has sparked her desire toward exercise physiology as a career.

After graduating, she plans to undertake a Bachelor of Clinical Exercise Physiology at Griffith University.

Caitlyn returned to full-time competition in 2019 and has put extra time into her fitness.

She has also continued from where she left off with her results before her injury.

In late 2019, she had the option of performing at the Oceania Competition, or studying under two of the world’s best coaches in Argentina at their request.

Caitlyn chose the latter...

It was an invaluable experience that could not have been passed over.

As it turned out, COVID happened six weeks after the Peck family returned to Australia, so we were consequently very happy that we had the opportunity to do this at the time.

In 2020, Caitlyn won the first round of the local league, but we weren’t able to have State or National titles thanks to the pandemic.

In 2021, we had State titles, but the Nationals was cancelled due to the current COVID outbreaks happening down in Melbourne and Sydney.

Caitlyn qualified for the Australian Team to represent our country at the World Championships that are being held in Paraguay.

Sadly again, due to Australia’s current stance on closed international borders except for essential travel, she would not be able to attend this event.

Caitlyn also placed first at her Skating Championship in the Junior International Solo Dance category.

So as both parents and coaches of Caitlyn, we can proudly say that she is such a motivator for all those around her - including us!

She is a whirlwind of charisma and energy that 'scoops up' everyone along her life route and takes them on her journey.

People often ask us if we push her hard, when in reality it is the exact opposite!

She will definitely be an asset to any organisation or group she associates herself with.

Attached are photos from various competitions and training sessions throughout this year, as well as video links to her performances at this year’s State Championships.

Attached is also a photo of the combined Australian results from respective State Championships for 2021 - because we couldn't hold the Nationals.

This is the benchmark that would have been used had our international borders been open for representation at this year's World Championships.

We hope this story provides some inspiration to you all to discover and pursue your dreams!

Kind regards

Mr Greg Peck

Canterbury’s First Business Leaders Breakfast Wows Audience

Canterbury’s First Business Leaders Breakfast Wows Audience

Canterbury held their first ever Business Leaders Breakfast this morning at our campus Trade Training Centre Restaurant, with our entrepreneurial students mixing with Logan area business owners and managers, to share ideas, exchange knowledge and keep Logan innovating.

The free event’s guest speaker was the truly remarkable Humanitarian and Social Justice Advocate (and successful entrepreneur) Katura Halleday.

The now 16-year-old founded the artwork auction social enterprise 8x8 To Educate, which donates 100% of profits to youth education in Developing Nations like Mozambique, where she lived and witnessed the appalling impacts of poverty, violence, crime, broken families, sexual discrimination and poor education firsthand.

Katura now provides advocacy and much needed academic and health education to the world’s poorest girls funded by keynote addresses – such as today’s breakfast event, online art exhibitions and book sales of Rina’s Story.

The enormous amount of practical world-changing ‘good’ that she’s achieved in three short years stunned the room, and gave students and business leaders alike pause for thought.

And… great encouragement to aim big while bettering the world in their own fields and interests.

So a big ‘thank you’ for speaking to us Katura, and thanks to all the local Logan area business leaders who attended this morning to share their knowledge and ideas with our students, with rewards of great coffee, a big breakfast and some attendee gifts.

Katura Halleday LinkedIn Bio

I would like to introduce myself; my name is Katura Halleday. I am 16 and define myself as a humanitarian and social justice advocate, using my voice to highlight educational equality on the world stage.

I am passionate about two things in my life - art being one, and the other, the education of young women in developing countries.

By combining these two passions I’ve been able to unite a group of my peers, provide an opportunity for members of my community to enjoy art, and help continue the education of those less fortunate.

In 2018 I started a Social Enterprise, 8x8 to Educate, donating 100% of the profits to education in Developing Nations.

I have three main income streams now - keynote speaker, a book that I illustrated with my 13-year-old sister called Rina’s Story, and an annual Art Competition – 8x8.

I was a finalist for Gold Coast Citizen of the Year in 2018 and the Women in Business Rising Star for 2018.

I also had the privilege of being interviewed by the United Nations on Children's Rights and was invited to present the documentary Katura’s Story to the United Nations in New York.

In 2020, I was honoured as a 7 News Young Achiever Finalist, 5 x International Stevie Awards Winner – including silver awardee of the Female Innovator of the Year.

While I am humbled by these awards and opportunities, I am acutely aware and grateful for the platform these opportunities have given me to have my voice heard and to support my peers locally and internationally.

I’ve been able to advocate for educational equality as a guest speaker at the Perm International Forum for Volunteers over in Russia, as the Australian representative for Golden Rule Day, as a member of the Student Advisory Board and a Mayor Student Ambassador – Gold Coast.

I hope to provide through my experiences, an example to other students of the joy that can be found in a life that on some level involves service to others.

It would be great to see our Canterbury community attending Night One of this competition, to really dominate the crowd and support 21 Laneway when they perform.

The event is designed to provide students with a full on ‘rock show’ experience - it is not your average school eisteddfod.

Bands can have a great time on stage while putting on a high-energy show, but a huge factor in this is having a high energy audience.

So we encourage students to bring along their friends to this great social event.

One of the big criteria the judges are assessing is stage presence and energy, so having a fun crowd will assist with bringing that energy! 😊

Please Note: When booking tickets, everyone is allocated an assigned seat due to COVID rules.

However, subject to COVID conditions on the night, there should be a ‘dance floor / mosh pit’ type area open at the front near the stage, where patrons are welcome to visit during the show, instead of just staying in their seat all night.

At the moment, this is open to one person per 2m2, but this is subject to change as restrictions ease.

So please help us spread the word, then come support our very talented Rock Band in person!

Thank you and ROCK ON!! image.php?hash=6e84ea6d79ae48da475cf3743e9460833d316282image.php?hash=11d800602ae08a9e40c94af51b1647b533e8b7a8

IMPORTANT: Term 4 Week 1 Entrance E Closure & Major Campus Roadworks

IMPORTANT: Term 4 Week 1 Entrance E Closure & Major Campus Roadworks

Dear Parents, Carers, Students & Staff,

If you use Entrance E or park near the Trade Training Centre, PLEASE take the time to familiarise yourself with THIS CAMPUS ROADWORKS MAP.

Due to bad weather delays, the major roadworks happening around Entrance E, the Athletics Track, Sports Hall and Cricket Nets will not be completed until after the end of Week 1, Term 4.

MAJOR POINTS:

Entrance E will be CLOSED!!!

The previous EXIT ONLY gate between Entrances D and E will now operate BOTH WAYS as an ENTRY AND EXIT GATE.

The Trade Training Centre carpark can only be reached via this newly changed access point.

Entrance F at the top back corner of the campus, is now the ONLY entry and exit point for ALL Aquatic & Tennis Centre traffic, that will need to temporarily travel along the gravel road around the rear of the Athletics Track.

The Year 12 student carpark is now ONLY accessible via this same Entrance F and spaces will be limited during construction work.

All affected carparks are planned to have new directional arrow markings added this long weekend - weather permitting.

Please follow these arrows and any directions given by College staff manning the entrance and exit gates during the first week back at school.

There is also a clearly marked and fence protected pedestrian crossing through these major roadworks near the Squash Courts and Cricket Nets – please see the detailed map for the exact location.

Please help spread the word to reduce as much traffic and parking confusion as possible, when school resumes on Tuesday morning 5 October 2021, after the Monday Queen’s Birthday Public Holiday.

We appreciate your patience during these roadworks and suggest you arrive a little earlier than normal to Canterbury during Week 1 while everybody gets used to this temporary system.

Thank you!

REMINDER: Please keep our students, staff, groundskeepers and construction workers safe by obeying our strict 10KPH speed limit on school grounds at all times.

This week we experienced some major problems with parents speeding to and from our holiday camps, putting facilities staff at risk around their green maintenance shed.
