Canterbury College's 2024-2027 Strategic Direction

Canterbury College's 2024-2027 Strategic Direction

This week, we launched our new Strategic Direction 2024-2027.

This document charts an ambitious agenda as Canterbury moves towards its 40th Anniversary in 2027 and our 50th Anniversary in 2037.

Included in the Strategic Direction document is a reiteration of what makes Canterbury 'Canterbury' - our motto, vision, values and expectations of our students.

But within the 25 strategies, spread across 5 spheres, I hope that parents, carers and staff are able to appreciate that we are embarking on some large scale reforms and improvements to the quality of our educational product and our campus.

I am ambitious for our students and our College.

What we are doing in the school is beginning to be noticed by other schools in the sector across Australia.

The profile of our talented staff is lifting.

The breadth and development of our students across the four dimensions of a Canterbury education - Academics, Sport, The Arts, Service and Leadership -- is also lifting.

The national awards and recognition that the College has received in the past five years is testament to the inspiring work occurring across all parts of our community.

We are responding in this document to some of the megatrends impacting education across the world -- generative AI, deregulated school days and blended learning, phonics-based literacy, 'big-data', character development, sustainability and the changing world of university and work.

Strategies sit within this document which actively engage with these issues at a school level, as they will impact the experience of our students over the next decade.

Importantly, within each Sphere, we have also acknowledged that there is continuous improvement required in the operations of the College and we have been careful to capture these priorities as well.

As our Junior School nears its capacity, our Senior School does have room to grow in size.

This will happen naturally as larger numbers push through from our Year 6 cohorts every year.

But we have a generous campus footprint, thanks to the foresight of the founders and early board members at Canterbury.

It is therefore not difficult to adjust our buildings and offerings to a larger Senior School of about 1,000 students by the end of the decade.

Planning will commence in this Strategic Direction cycle for at least one new state-of-the-art building for our Senior School students which transforms and amplifies their educational experience.

The Strategic Direction 2024-27 document is available to view and download on our website BY CLICKING HERE.

As is always the case, if there are any strategies or priorities in this document that you would like to discuss with me personally, my door is always open for conversations.

Kind regards

Mr Dan Walker
College Principal

EMPOWERED For Life – BRIDGE BUILDERS®

Relationships are an essential part of school and life.

Learning how to make healthy friendships and manage difficult relationships are essential life skills for all ages.

Conflict is a normal part of any community, however, unresolved or poorly resolved conflict, can cause children to feel devalued, stressed and separated from others.

It can also reduce their ability to be learners and sometimes even lead to bullying.

Some children today, are growing up more confident in operating technical devices than dealing with frustration, developing flexible thinking, or problem-solving challenging relationships.

In a world that is rapidly changing, increasing in anxiety and fear, and reinforcing isolation, the teaching, modelling and encouraging of emotional and social skills by parents and carers has never been more important.

Jocelyne Chirnside is a mother of three and a teacher of 37 years, and the creator of the BRIDGE BUILDERS® Program.

Canterbury College is equipping your child with tools to deal with everyday conflict and reduce bullying through this program.

Jocelyne is passionate about creating cultural change and equipping adults with a consistent understanding, language and skills to empower their children to be resilient and resolve their own conflict.

We hope you can join us in helping your child be EMPOWERED For Life!

This session will explore the following skills and topics:

  • Understanding Choices – the difference between conflict and bullying.
  • Responses – the physiological and neural reactions to conflict or bullying.
  • Growing Resilience Skills.
  • Managing Conflict – BRIDGE BUILDERS® skills and language.

Guest Speaker: Jocelyne Chirnside M.Ed. (Hons), Dip. T.

Author, researcher, teacher and creator of the BRIDGE BUILDERS® Program and a National Social and Emotional Learning Consultant in schools.

Also available for purchase:

Jocelyne's book about the BRIDGE BUILDERS® Program: EMPOWERED for LIFE – Equipping children to deal with everyday conflict and bullying.

Sunday’s 2024 JDS Gold Coast Region: Canterbury Taipans U17 Junior Tennis Singles Tournament | Event Wrap & Photo Gallery

On Sunday 18 February, our Canterbury Taipans Tennis Centre hosted some great upcoming junior tennis players, who represent the Gold Coast Region – a super way to start our first JDS of the year.

Beautiful sunny weather shone upon these talented young future tennis champions, who were all putting their highest game on show on the courts.

Truly a good number of prodigies were present – Ocean, Maxwell, Sebastian, Havanna, Tayla, Samuel, Kira, Brodie, Jordan, Deniz, Aran, Sami, Kaito – so many players…

Many thanks to the Beenleigh Tennis Club’s Kiel and A.J. for supporting and helping us out on the day with extra courts – we couldn't have done it without you.

Special thanks to the tennis parents and carers too – you guys are the real ‘behind the scenes’ champions during your children’s formative tennis years.

And congratulations to all the players themselves; to the eventual tournament winners; the Canterbury Tennis staff – Kym, Cameron and Pierre; and to Ryan Kebs of KDV – love your work!

Looking forward to our next tournament in July and we hope to see you there…
