Friday's 2022 Lead With HEART Leadership Event - Photo Gallery

We welcomed Year 6 student leaders from Cedar Creek State School, Bethania Lutheran School, Gleneagle State School, Greenbank State School and the Woodhill State School for our annual Lead With HEART leadership event.

The day's vision saw these Year 6 student leadership groups being brought together to help kick-start their momentum for 2022, helping them reach their milestones and leaving a lasting legacy at their school.

Lead With HEART was facilitated by the professional company yLead.

This full-day experience educates and empowers students to be the best leaders they can be.

Throughout the day, students explore the acronym H E A R T in a series of fun challenges that summarise being:

Helpful – looking out for everyday actions that enrich the lives of others.

Energetic – promoting and sharing positive energy.

Active and Aware – becoming more aware of personal strengths and how they can be used to take positive action as a leader.

Resilient – the importance of having the courage to try new things, and learning to respond positively to challenging or difficult situations.

Team player – the importance of working with others in an encouraging and supportive environment.

Thank you to the visiting staff from each school who attended on the day.

From Our Performing Arts Captain Nathaniel Harris

From Our Performing Arts Captain Nathaniel Harris

With the start of our school year unlike any other, things are slowly returning to normal...

The Performing Arts Department is excited to be able to start our performance season soon.

You will see our usual Assembly and Chapel performances, where we will continue to spotlight our students and their talents, from the range of co-curricular ensembles within the Performing Arts Department.

Later in the year, we plan to present our Winter and Spring Concert Seasons again in Terms Two and Four.

Arguably, the most exciting event for Canterbury this year will be our 35th Anniversary Gala Concert.

This will be the Performing Arts Department's chance to shine with the gala concert event being held at QPAC in Term Three at 6:30pm Monday night 25 July 2022.

We will again be taking the opportunity to participate in the Anglican Schools Music Festival in August.

This event takes place at the QPAC Concert Hall every two years, but due to COVID-19, this will actually be the first one since 2018.

This performance combines 14 schools from around Brisbane, the Sunshine Coast, Fraser Coast, Gold Coast and Toowoomba, involving several students across bands, choirs, and orchestras.

Our Studio Tuition program has already commenced and recitals will begin in Term Two.

This program provides tuition for all areas in the Arts Department - including music, dance and drama.

Music eisteddfods and competitions will start in Term Two and continue until Term Four for all groups and ensembles.

Our popular on-campus Loud Lunches will begin in Term Two.

Dance eisteddfods will take place in the middle of the year.

Theatre Sports has two teams this year and both are getting prepared for their impromptu on-stage games later in the year.

And our Theatre Company will have a major production in Term Four so stay tuned!

Now there is still time to join the Studio Tuition program and join ensembles in the co-curricular program - please don't be shy and please don't miss out - you won't regret it!

So What's New?

We are bringing back the Concert Choir, which is available for all students from Years 10 – 12.

Rock School has FIVE bands now!

Our very first Beginner Rock Band takes place on Monday afternoon and consists of students from Years 7 – 9.

Brekkie Buskers will soon take place on Tuesday mornings at the Yalburru Café in Term Two.

Chamber Music School is a new addition to the Performing Arts Program, where all our Chamber Music Ensembles come together on Monday mornings to practice.

And finally, the very exciting Junior School Musical for Years 5 – 6: THE LION KING!

Best of luck for this term everyone and I look forward to all the fantastic opportunities throughout the year.

Please feel free to contact the Coordinators, Group or Ensemble Captains, or me for any more information.

We are here to help :)

From Our Sports Captain Kate Neill

From Our Sports Captain Kate Neill

Examining moral compasses within teams is my main focus for 2022.

A 'moral compass' is an umbrella term that includes sportsmanship, participation, and ethical behaviour within our College's sport.

I want this to be a main focal point of this year, due to the commercialisation of sports having emphasised the need for success over participation.

But what truly is success? What does success mean to us? To Canterbury?

The definition of success is to achieve one's desired vision or goals.

Now, this success doesn't have to be winning and, to be honest, winning shouldn't be a team's main goal.

I believe success for Canterbury is everyone having a go and having fun.

Currently, there is an imbalance between sportsmanship and competitiveness which allows for moral dilemmas to occur.

Now being able to view our school's sporting teams over various years, I have realised the significance of examining moral standards that are instilled in us as young athletes.

These standards are going to differ from sport to sport and amongst teams, but I believe that morals and attitudes are predominately built around one's environment.

At Canterbury, I have witnessed great teamwork and sportsmanship across all teams.

But now there is an opportunity to work on the level of participation following into Term Two.

Instead of asking you to join a sport, I invite you to join a little family - your team!

I view sport as my outlet and a way of expressing my true personality.

Sport is also a place where everyone is there to try their best and learn new skills, without judgement noticeable in other life avenues.

Furthermore, being involved in sport provides so many meaningful learning experiences and qualities such as time management, teamwork, health, flexibility and resilience.

The pre-season training for Term Two sports has commenced, and now is the perfect time to build strong bonds with your team-mates and a positive, social environment for your sport.

The Term Two sports are hockey, netball, rugby and tennis.

Another aspect of this moral compass that I would like to dive into is effort.

With effort includes coming to training fully prepared, trying your absolute best, and applying sportsmanship - whether to your rival schools or anybody in general - this level of decency and sportsmanship should stay consistent.

I look forward to watching all the teams 'work hard' and 'play hard' throughout this year.

And if you spot me watching your games, please say hi! I love all sports and I am always happy for a chat.

Please find attached a short video from our Term One Captains of Sport.

GO TAIPANS!!

2022 Year 12 Seniors Soiree - Photo Gallery

Last Friday evening, our Year 12 students, along with their parents and carers - as well as their teachers and senior administrative staff, all came together to celebrate the Class of 2022's final year of school at Canterbury College.

Under beautiful evening skies in perfect March conditions, parents and carers were able to meet senior College staff in person, as well as their son or daughter's Heads of House and class teachers.

It was great to be able to reschedule this 'feel-good' event as we support our wonderful Canterbury Year 12 cohort over the next eight months!
