AQUATIC BIOLOGY
‘I’ve got a creek in my backyard’ is an aquatic biology unit that focuses on the environmental health of the creek system that flows through Canterbury College.
Students are given the opportunity in small groups to survey a section of the creek and map its environmental diversity.
Once students have completed their survey, they will initiate a plan to improve the creek’s health, making it favourable for long-term species habitation.

2023 Semester 2 Junior School Spark Learning Expo | 11:30am - 1:30pm, Wednesday 15 November | Canterbury Events Centre (CEC).
We invite you to explore the displays and presentations created by our upper Junior School students throughout Semester 2 this year in their Spark Classes.
---------------------
What is SPARK?
SPARK is an elective-based ‘hands-on’ curriculum for Years 5 and 6 students that is unique to Canterbury.
Each semester our students choose a special subject to study.
Then students from both year levels are combined into the same classroom and taught by relevant staff.
SPARK is about building curiosity, encouraging students to try something new, and providing an exceptional opportunity for them to embark on their own learning journey, as part of their ‘World Ready’ Canterbury education.
When does SPARK occur?
SPARK happens once per week, with students encouraged to continue their learning beyond the classroom.
How does SPARK link to the curriculum?
SPARK focuses on the Australian Curriculum’s general capabilities, looking at critical and creative thinking, personal and social capability, ethical understanding and intercultural understanding.
How can I see my child’s learning?
The Junior School hosts a learning exhibition at the end of each semester, where all students will have something to exhibit based on their SPARK sessions.

MISSION TO MARS
Imagine 50 years into the future, and all the great nations have banded together to seek alternative settlements, to cater for our ever-growing population.
We are constantly innovating in science, technology, engineering, maths, art and architecture.
Spacefaring organisations are seeking to establish a settlement on Mars capable of supporting thousands of intrepid human volunteers.
Here, students will be responding to an open invitation to suppliers, which includes several important factors – such as structural design and infrastructure, daily operations, human factors and automation.
They must overcome the challenges frequently faced by those in real-life scenarios.
Students will gain valuable experience in the workings of a strong performing ‘STEAM Team’.
At the Spark Learning Expo, they will unveil their individual and collaborative solutions to challenges, and pitch their designs and ideas to the community.

Canterbury ELC Kagaru 'Bush Kindy' Class: 'Community For Creatures' Banner Project With Australian Conservation Foundation Video
https://youtu.be/axys_99JVvY
Today the Australian Conservation Foundation (ACF) - Brisbane South & Logan Group, along with our local Federal Member for Forde – Mr Bert Van Manen MP, joined our busy ELC Kagaru Class.
As part of a joint ACF - Canterbury 'Community For Creatures' Project, our students collaborated on a 3m display banner featuring iconic Australian animals.
The young students used a variety of art materials, and discussed each animal’s situation, and how they can support environmental conservation in their local Waterford area.
Through this event – and their popular ‘Bush Kindy’ on-campus sessions, our students are gaining a deeper appreciation for the importance of nature and wildlife in our lives.
Well done Mrs Suellen Fawkes and her wonderful Kagaru (Kookaburra) Class!

GREEN THUMBS: GARDENING & PLANT PROPAGATION
Some simple facts:
- Climate Change is here and plants are a key part of the solution.
- Cost Of Living increases are here to stay.
- Everyone wants to cook well using fresh ingredients.
- Beautiful landscaping and the desire to fill our homes with plants is ‘on trend’.
- Humans in the western world have finally embraced ‘mindfulness’.
- A great place to learn and practise mindfulness is in the garden.
Students will learn gardening skills and plant propagation techniques, giving them a ‘green thumb’ and welcoming them to the leisurely productive world of self-sufficiency.
They will grow their own food and propagate their own plants, including those for a multi-plant pot they can take home!

World Teacher's Day Reflection
World Teacher's Day Reflection

Canterbury celebrated World Teacher's Day this morning with a special breakfast function, at which some of our students were the guest speakers.
This is an annual tradition at Canterbury, and I know how much it means to our staff, that our students share their stories of the special teachers who have made an impact on them.
There are many who believe that teaching has become such a complex and under-appreciated profession, that it's becoming harder to persuade people to join our ranks.
I don't believe this is true...
In fact, my observations about our school is that we have a much higher percentage of graduates going onto become teachers, than at any other school I've ever worked in.
And this cannot be an accident...
I know it's because of the empathetic, charismatic and smart teaching staff we have here.
I know that without saying anything, it has inspired generations of Canterbury students to go on and become teachers themselves.
I will have more to say on an exciting new initiative to attract high-performing Canterbury alumni back to our school as teachers in the new year - so please watch this space!
But on this day, I give my thanks as the Principal of this wonderful school, to the team of 120 teachers who go above and beyond for our students every day.
Please visit our Facebook Page HERE and see all the photos from this morning's breakfast.
