SATURDAY SPORT UPDATE: TAS & Junior TAS Sport Resumes THIS Saturday 21 August!
Dear Parents, Carers & Students,
After the Queensland Government’s decision to ease COVID restrictions on Community Sport, The Associated Schools (TAS) have decided to resume TAS and Junior TAS Sport this weekend! 🙌👏
The fixtures will be the SAME as the originally scheduled Saturday 21 August fixtures, to help reduce confusion.
As this decision came as a surprise, we understand if some families have already made other plans for this weekend. 😕
So could we please ask everyone to use the relevant MyCC News article weblink, OR notify their relevant coach or teacher about their attendance this Saturday BEFORE 3:00pm THIS Thursday 19 August (i.e. TOMORROW), so we can make sure we have enough players for each team this weekend.

2021 Australian Mathematics Competition Done & 'Descartes'ed!
Last Thursday, 26 eager Canterbury mathematicians from across Years 7-12 flexed their problem-solving muscles in the Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC), run by the Australian Mathematics Trust.
This competition is internationally recognised and has been held annually since 1978, with students from over 30 countries involved.
Students answer a set of 30 questions online in the Junior, Intermediate and Senior divisions.
The competition provides the opportunity to test critical thinking skills against others from around the country.
There is an emphasis on problem-solving and the questions are designed to be fun and accessible.
Around 50% of participants qualify to receive a Certificate of High Distinction, Distinction or Credit.
All other competition entrants receive a Certificate of Participation or a Proficiency Certificate.
Prize winners for outstanding results are also given free entry into the 2021 Australian Intermediate Mathematical Olympiad (AIMO), which is the first screening competition for the prestigious Australian Mathematical Olympiad Committee Invitational Program.
We await our 26 students' results with anticipation!

Restrictions Ease BUT Masks Remain For Another Week
Easing Of Restrictions
The Queensland Government today announced restrictions would ease in the 11 South-East Queensland (SEQ) Local Government Areas (LGAs) including Logan, Southern Brisbane and the Northern Gold Coast from 4:00pm THIS Friday 20 August 2021.
This has been brought forward from this Sunday 22 August.
The eased restrictions, which include lifting the number of people who can gather together, will be detailed in the roadmap located on the Queensland Health website here - https://www.covid19.qld.gov.au/government-actions/roadmap-to-easing-queenslands-restrictions
Masks In Schools
Despite the easing of some restrictions, the current requirement for students and teachers to wear masks in schools has been extended until 4:00pm Friday 27 August 2021 in the 11 South-East Queensland LGAs including Logan, Southern Brisbane and the Northern Gold Coast.
Masks In The Wider Community
Masks must continue to be worn until 4:00pm Friday 27 August 2021 in the 11 SEQ LGAs indoors - including in workplaces.
The Queensland Chief Health Officer confirmed that if workers could socially distance within their workplace (i.e. maintain a distance of 1.5m), they do not need to wear a mask, but should put it on when they move around their workplace.
Masks will not be required outside, however people must continue to carry them at all times and to wear them if they can't socially distance.
Community Sport Recommences
Community Sport will recommence from THIS Saturday 21 August 2021.
However, we are awaiting confirmation from The Associated Schools (TAS) organisation, who are currently discussing this Saturday’s sport round with the various School Principals and their Sport Directors now.

United Nations Day: THU 26 AUG – Call For Student Videos!
United Nations Day: Thursday 26 August 2021 – Canterbury ‘Around The World’ Video Entries
When your children come home from Canterbury this afternoon, how about this for a fun family project to video tonight?
We've received 0.0% smartphone video entries so far and we would LOVE to see some!
It’s estimated we have around 80-90 cultures and between 50-60 languages proudly represented right here at Canterbury College!
Now COVID restrictions have forced the cancellation of our major campus-wide multicultural event on Thursday 26 August – which is very disappointing.
BUT… instead of accepting total defeat, we still want to celebrate United Nations Day digitally, by assembling a student-made video montage, showcasing as many different Canterbury cultures as possible.
The idea is simple AND easy…
We are asking our students just to video some of their home life culture for us on their smartphones…
That’s it!
Maybe you or your parents prepare some special international dishes, or you have a recipe passed down through the generations that leads back to another homeland…
Maybe you or your parents have some traditional clothing from another country or culture that you can wear and show us…
Is there some artwork or interesting objects around your house from a foreign country with special significance to your family?
You might even have some family customs or prayers or habits or superstitions you would like to share...
How about some of your foreign language or singing? But with an English translation afterwards please.
Get your family involved in the filming and have some fun – there are no hard or fast rules.
Just please explain what we are seeing in your video – what culture it’s from and the background behind it.
If you can add traditional music from your culture in the background even better.
All we need is about 1-2 minutes of smartphone video.
The best videos will be compiled together to make our Canterbury ‘Around The World’ Video that will be shared across our College comms channels on United Nations Day: Thursday 26 August 2021.

Tim Li's Triumphant Trio - Music To Canterbury's Ears
Last Sunday, Canterbury’s wonderful Coordinator Of Chamber Music Mr Tim Li, and the piano trio he teaches outside school hours - Amogus Trio - were announced as the winners of Strike A Chord 2021.
This talented trio was awarded the Robert Salzer 1st Prize worth $5,000, as well as two special prizes that include an invitation to perform at the 2022 Bendigo Chamber Music Festival, plus a 12-month music mentorship in Melbourne.
Musica Viva’s Strike A Chord is Australia’s largest and most important national chamber music competition for Secondary School ensembles, and 2021 saw more than 100 ensembles across Australia entering.
The jury panel comprised five of Australia’s leading performers and educators.
So in short, if your children are in Mr Li’s class… they are in excellent industry-leading musical hands!

The Canterbury Taipans Tennis Club at Canterbury College is holding a FREE information session for any South-East Queensland Junior Tennis Players interested in pushing through to College Level over in the USA.
All players from the local Logan tennis community are most welcome and a sausage sizzle will be included.
