Care Central Services

All our physical and mental health and wellbeing student support services are co-located in the one handy place – Canterbury’s Care Central hub.

Care Central Services

Located at Easterly Street’s main gate roundabout, Care Central is a ‘one stop shop’ for every student from Prep to Year 12 requiring:

  • First Aid treatment
  • medication dispensing
  • Sick Bay bedding and attention
  • individual, small group or family unit counselling
  • mental health and general wellbeing advice
  • dispute mediation and conflict resolution
  • referrals to external allied health professionals such as psychiatrists, pediatricians and psychologists
  • College Chaplain guidance or support.

Making Appointments

Appointments can be arranged with any of our professional Care Central staff – which includes two fully qualified Nurses and our College Paramedic, plus three fully certified Student Counsellors shown here.

These friendly and caring Canterbury staff are all overseen by our Care Central Manager.

Parents, carers, students and family groups can make appointments for anytime between 8:00am – 4:00pm, Mondays to Fridays during Term-time.

This is especially important for new families joining our school for the first time, if parents need to introduce their children, and discuss any of their pre-existing medical conditions – like asthma, diabetes, depression, anxiety or severe allergies etc, with a member of our team.

This best ensures a seamless and well-informed support service for our young people throughout the year, should or when they require our assistance on-campus.

If you wish to access Canterbury’s counselling services, we suggest contacting the relevant classroom teacher in the Junior School or the relevant Head of House in the Senior School, as your first step.

On-Campus Illness & Distress

Obviously, suddenly unwell or seriously distressed students can attend Care Central at any time without an appointment during school hours, with the permission and/or supervision of their teacher or responsible staff member, depending on the student’s age.

Parents or carers will then be contacted to arrange prompt collection of their child from Care Central ONLY, while under our trained medical or mental health staff supervision.

As part of this procedure, our Junior School and Senior School Admin Offices no longer house sick bays nor keep medications on-hand for their students.

These have all been centralised and quality-assured at Care Central, on the ‘border’ of the Junior and Senior School campuses.

All medications must be taken by a parent or carer directly to Care Central where it will be signed in and stored appropriately.

24 Hour Illness Campus Exclusion Policy

Our Care Central is an extremely busy facility, so we strongly request that parents and carers keep their children at home, if they are feeling genuinely unwell before school starts.

This includes high temperatures, major appetite loss, stomach cramps, vomiting, diarrhoea, fevers, chills and flu symptoms etc.

This avoids spreading germs and viruses throughout the school to other students and our staff, and saves you having to make a rushed daytime trip to the College from work or home.

We kindly ask that you also do not return your child to school the following day, if this is less than 24 hours after their initial presentation with clear illness symptoms – thank you.

Student Counselling

Our wonderful student counsellors offer fully private and confidential 30-50 minute sessions, to discuss students’ mental health worries and concerns in a completely non-judgmental environment.

This confidentiality is upheld unless our staff reasonably suspect criminal danger, gross neglect or domestic abuse is occurring – in which case the matter must be reported to authorities for investigation by law.

The length of these sessions depends on the complexity of the issue at hand, and normally the initial consult is longer, while the entire matter is first discussed and a course of action is agreed upon.

The information covered can be conveyed to parents and carers – but only with the student’s written consent, along with the advice we have provided to the student.

This way, both parties can work together using the same strategy during and outside school hours, to better ensure a happy outcome.

Issues may revolve around unlawful behaviour (e.g. vandalism, vaping, stealing etc), sexism, racism, bullying, conflict – either verbal or physical, social isolation, or general acts of unkindness.

We do appreciate it does take courage for young people to admit they need support, or when they believe a friend or peer needs adult support.

Again, if you wish to access Canterbury’s counselling services, we recommend contacting the relevant classroom teacher in the Junior School or the relevant Head of House in the Senior School, as your best starting point.

Canterbury Care Online Service

Senior School’s Canterbury Care online service is available here or via Senior’s MyCC Quick Links section, offering students a private way to start a conversation, when they have concerns for themselves, their friends or their peers.

This digital form allows students to provide specific information and evidence, as well as request follow-up contact to share more details, and discuss their concerns directly with a staff member in-person.

Years 7-12 students should feel extremely welcome to use this discreet service to resolve any issues or report any serious school matters to Canterbury staff.

College Chaplain Father Dan Talbot

Access to our full-time, in-term College Chaplain is available via Care Central.

Father Dan Talbot plays a significant role in our Religious and Values Education (RaVE) Program, and is a strong voice for inclusion – connecting students from ALL faith perspectives, into one reflective community founded on our shared values.

Please drop by or say hello if you see Father Dan around the campus, or make an appointment with him if you need a more in-depth chat.

He also posts relevant and topical ‘Weekly Reflections’ and Prayers on his dedicated MyCC Chaplaincy Page during each school term, along with regular Chapel Service times.

Our Reverend holds a Bachelor of Business Degree, Graduate Diploma in Theology, Master of Arts in Theology and a Certificate in Clinical Pastoral Education.

He is also a Level 2 Sports Trainer accredited with the NRL.

Father Dan Talbot officially commenced with Canterbury College on Monday 3 July 2023.

Before coming here, Father Dan was the Rector of the Jimboomba Anglican Church, where he served since 2007.

He is also the Anglican Area Dean for Logan – a position he has continued to hold while serving as our College Chaplain.

Father Dan has served as the Deputy Chair of the St Hilda’s School Board since 2011 and previously as a part-time Chaplain for the Logan Police District.

In addition, he has been a part-time Pastor at Emmaus College in Jimboomba since 2007.

Father Dan is married with three teenage children, and when not working, he can be found restoring classic cars, going fishing, boating and having fun with his family.
