Goldsworthy House Service Initiative Builds Schoolwide Connections

Goldsworthy House Service Initiative Builds Schoolwide Connections

In a heartwarming conclusion to the Goldsworthy House Service Initiative, Senior School students recently led a reading program that brought together students from across the campus.

Students from ELC to Year 3 enjoyed shared reading sessions with older peers, creating meaningful and memorable moments.

Senior students brought in their favourite childhood books, sparking conversations and storytelling with younger students.

The activity celebrated the joy of reading while encouraging older students to reflect on their early reading experiences and pass on that enthusiasm.

This final stage followed earlier connections between Form Classes and Prep-Year 1 students, which began late last term. The sense of connection, care, and engagement across year levels was truly inspiring.

I'm proud of how our students embraced the opportunity to build relationships, share stories, and enrich our school culture.

Thank you to our Junior School teachers, Mrs Gina McPherson (Teacher Librarian), Heads of Houses, Mrs Amanda von Kanel (Director of Student Development), Mrs Georgia Skinner (Assistant Head of Goldsworthy House), and Goldsworthy leaders for their support in making this initiative a success.

Mr Nic Aldridge

Head of Goldsworthy House

Year 9 and 10 Dance Students Inspired by Contemporary Performance

Year 9 and 10 Dance Students Inspired by Contemporary Performance

On Thursday 15 May, Year 9 and 10 Dance students attended Blue by the Australasian Dance Collective (ADC) as part of their curriculum studies.

This excursion is a key element of the Dance program, offering students the chance to experience high-quality live performance and deepen their understanding of the art form.

Celebrating 40 years of dance, Blue featured a dynamic triple bill that honoured ADC’s past, celebrated its present, and envisioned its future.

The performance was not only artistically rich but also directly linked to the students’ current unit, Moving Stories, which explores narrative through choreography.

Seeing industry professionals perform live enabled students to critically engage with choreographic structures, performance techniques, and design elements.

It also provided valuable inspiration for their creative work.

Alumni Spotlight | Sola Hughes (Class of 2017)

Violinist | Australian World Orchestra Academy Player 2025

We are thrilled to celebrate the incredible achievements of Canterbury alumni Sola Hughes, who has been selected as a 2025 Academy Player with the prestigious Australian World Orchestra (AWO).

Currently in her third year at the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM), Sola studies under the guidance of acclaimed violinists Adam Chalabi and Zoë Black.

She previously completed her Bachelor of Music at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music, where she studied with Michele Walsh and Natsuko Yoshimoto.

Reflecting on this exciting opportunity, Sola shared:

“I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to play with the Australian World Orchestra. I’m going to be absolutely star struck and I’m so excited to absorb as much knowledge as possible. I can’t wait to get into it and to hear and experience the sound. Also, Mahler 4 is my favourite Mahler Symphony!”

Sola’s musical journey has already included standout performances such as Stravinsky’s Violin Concerto with the Conservatorium orchestra, side-by-side collaborations with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, and participation in chamber music festivals across Australia and internationally, including the Australian Festival of Chamber Music, Stradbroke Chamber Music Festival, and Musical Chairs in Montreal.

In 2021, her string trio took home the 4MBS Chamber Music Prize.

Known for her versatility and passion for chamber music, Sola continues to embrace new challenges and musical explorations.

We are incredibly proud of her achievements and can’t wait to see what’s next for her in the world of classical music.

Congratulations, Sola — your Canterbury community is cheering you on!

QSO Young Instrumentalist Prize | Finalist Haydn Li

QSO Young Instrumentalist Prize | Finalist Haydn Li

On Saturday 26 April, our talented student Haydn Li (Year 12, Performing Arts Captain) competed in the Queensland Symphony Orchestra’s (QSO) prestigious Young Instrumentalist Prize – one of the state’s most high-profile competitions for young musicians learning an orchestral instrument.

This competition is renowned for showcasing exceptional young talent across Queensland, with only six finalists selected each year to perform.

Haydn, who was a finalist in both 2022 and 2023, has once again made it to the finals this year, continuing to demonstrate his dedication and remarkable musical ability.

We are very proud of Haydn’s achievements and look forward to celebrating many more milestones in his musical journey.

2025 ANZAC Week Canterbury College Commemorations | Representing Our Community

2025 ANZAC Week Canterbury College Commemorations | Representing Our Community

As a proud member of the Logan community, Canterbury was honoured to commemorate ANZAC Day across five moving ceremonies held from Wednesday to Friday this week.

It was our chance to pause, remember, and salute the incredible sacrifices made by Australia’s and New Zealand’s armed services and their families, across two World Wars and many other conflicts around the globe.

A heartfelt thank you to all the staff, students, parents, carers, families, and Logan community members who reflected alongside us, supported us behind the scenes, and especially to those who worked so hard to bring these events together with such solemnity and gravitas.

LEST WE FORGET.

Student Leader ANZAC Ceremony and Tour of Memorial – Wednesday Morning @ The Shrine Of Remembrance – ANZAC Square, Brisbane CBD.

On Wednesday morning, Canterbury’s Year 12 Student Leaders joined hundreds of other young Queensland students at ANZAC Square’s Shrine of Remembrance in Brisbane City.

They laid our College wreath and paid tribute to all those who have served our country in times of war.

Our students also toured the ANZAC Memorial Crypt’s interactive journey, spanning from World War One to today, exploring the people, places, and stories that underpin Queensland’s war experience.

2025 ANZAC Day Canterbury College Commemoration Ceremony – Thursday Afternoon @ Canterbury Events Centre (CEC)

On Thursday afternoon, during our Years 3–12 ANZAC Day Commemoration Ceremony, we gathered with students, staff, families, and special guests to honour the brave souls who selflessly stepped forward to defend our country in times of conflict.

We paid tribute not only to the original ANZAC soldiers but to all those who have served Australia, both at home and overseas.

Their hope, sacrifice, and service have deeply enriched our nation’s history, and we are forever grateful for the freedoms they secured for humankind.

As we approach ANZAC Day, we proudly remember their courage, compassion, and comradeship.

This ceremony at the CEC featured Canterbury’s own ANZAC Day Honour Roll, heartfelt tributes through video presentations, The Ode, The Last Post, One Minute’s Silence, The Rouse, the national anthems of Australia and New Zealand, as well as poetry, blessings, prayers, and the laying of wreaths.

A special mention goes to Cooper, William, and our dedicated cadets, who carried themselves with honour and respect throughout the event.

We also extend our sincere thanks to Dr Fletcher Mitchell, Coordinator of Band, whose moving story and voice added such depth and personal meaning to the occasion.

Finally, we extend our heartfelt thanks to our Performing Arts students for their beautiful performances, and to all staff, attending parents, students, and our special guest, Mr Geoffrey Walker, for making today’s ceremony so memorable.

2025 Canterbury ELC–Prep Easter Hat Parade | Photo Gallery

Last Friday, our CEC was buzzing with excitement for the annual ELC–Prep Easter Hat Parade.

From bird’s nests with eggs to pom-poms, flowers, bunny ears, twinkling lights, and more – the hats were bursting with colour, creativity, and Easter cheer.

It was clear that a lot of time and effort had gone into these headwear creations over the past few weeks at home.

A big thank you to our Canterbury families for making this ELC–Prep Easter Hat Parade so special!
