Canterbury’s Prep - Year 4 Student Easter Garden Pots | Telling Easter's Traditional Story...

During Term 1, Canterbury’s Junior School students in Prep to Year 4 have been creating their very own Easter Garden Pots, to help them tell the traditional Christian story of Easter at home these holidays.

College Chaplain Father Dan Talbot visited the classes during their Canterbury Kitchen Garden lessons, and explained their potted gardens required the following features:

  • A mound to represent the Hill of Golgotha where the crucifixions occurred.
  • Three stick crucifixes, including a larger central cross, for Jesus who died on 'Good Friday'.
  • A buried empty smaller pot to represent the tomb where Jesus’ body was placed.
  • A pebble path leading to the empty tomb, on which Mary walked and discovered that Jesus was Risen.
  • A rock representing the boulder that was rolled away from the entrance of the tomb, revealing the tomb was now empty.
  • And green growth which reminds us that God is still working and creating in our world today, just as we can still grow ourselves, to be the person God wants us to be.

Canterbury's Year 3 classes used actual grass seeds, but the other students used a ready grown sedum known as 'Blob'.

“The Easter Story is a message of Hope and Love, and these Easter Garden Pots are designed to encourage our students – with their parents and families – to discuss the story over this Easter break,” Father Talbot said.

“These living, growing gardens can work alongside other popular Easter symbols such as eggs – which are a symbol of new life, and even the chocolate – which reminds us how sweet it is to have Jesus in our life.”

In line with Canterbury College's Anglican values, during these garden-making lessons, students and families of all faiths and religions were acknowledged as being very welcome at the school.

Students engaged strongly with these innovative outdoor religious lessons, and they really enjoyed hearing about the traditional Christian story of Easter.

“There are so many Easter symbols, but it's great that this year, our younger students have an actual garden to take home with them,” Father Talbot said.

“Hopefully it helps those Canterbury families celebrate the real reason we have Easter in our homes these holidays, and keeping the gardens moist and healthy, should bring some extra ongoing joy into each household.”

Canterbury College wishes everyone a happy and holy Easter, and that the story of the Easter Garden will help you discover the Hope and Love that is offered by this traditional Christian story.

And make sure you check out our video to see so much more of the fun that we had making our Easter Garden Pots.

Spelling Mastery Program | Our Years 3-6 Research & Evidence-Based Direct Instruction Literacy Approach

Spelling Mastery Program | Our Years 3-6 Research & Evidence-Based Direct Instruction Literacy Approach

https://youtu.be/OrRP-jiiTSE

My name is Christina Jasem – Head of Literacy Development at Canterbury College, and it’s my pleasure to give you a look into our new spelling program: Spelling Mastery.

Here at Canterbury, we are excited to continue the implementation of our literacy vision of using evidence-based approaches to teaching literacy.

We know that students who are competent spellers also succeed in other areas of literacy and learning.

To this end, Spelling Mastery is a great fit for our school.

Spelling Mastery is a research-based program that uses the Direct Instruction Approach to enable teachers to deliver highly interactive, structured lessons that help students learn dependable spelling skills.

Direct Instruction is a teaching method and instructional approach that emphasises clear and explicit teaching of skills and concepts.

Spelling Mastery maximises student learning through fully planned and structured lessons that are carefully delivered to students, breaking down complex concepts into smaller, manageable steps.

Direct Instruction methods are efficient and effective.

Students are taught the strategies, spelling rules and patterns they need to know to be successful spellers.

The Spelling Mastery program uses three main approaches to make learning to spell easier.

The first of these is the phonemic approach in which students are explicitly taught the relationship between spoken sounds and written letters, with direct application to the spelling of words.

The second is the morphemic approach.

Students are taught about word morphemes, that is, the smallest unit of meaning or grammatical function in words.

Teaching the meaning of prefixes, base words and suffixes, allows students to not only spell multisyllabic words, but also to see connections of meaning between other words with the same prefix or suffix.

The last approach is the whole-word approach.

This teaches students about etymology – where words originate from and how spelling patterns in English were influenced by this, a particularly important skill when learning words that include irregular spelling patterns.

This year, all students in Years 3-6 are participating in Spelling Mastery lessons three times per week.

Students have completed their Spelling Mastery placement test, and have already been placed into a group that meets their current spelling needs.

It’s wonderful to see students in different year levels working together and supporting each other.

Current skill sets aren’t compared to others.

And because students are working in a class that meets their needs, they experience success at every step of the way.

In the words of Arthur Chickering and Stephen Ehrmann, learning is not a spectator sport.

The teaching methods used in Spelling Mastery ensure that all students are contributing, learning, and demonstrating their understanding multiple times during a session.

When you walk into a Spelling Mastery class, you will see 100% engagement.

In each session, students practice their knowledge of word structure and word meanings.

Having an automatic recall of these skills will empower students to be creative, analytical, and expressive writers across all learning areas.

We believe that the introduction of Spelling Mastery will greatly enhance our student’s learning experience and contribute to their academic success.

Year 8 Visual Art | Thunderegg Pots!

Our Year 8 Visual Art students have been busy making thunderegg pots in Term One.

The purpose of this unit is to build their ceramic modelling and sculptural skills.

It is designed to teach students about how to develop their concepts into an aesthetically pleasing three-dimensional form.

Students are being introduced to a variety of hand-building, joining and decorative techniques in this introductory unit.

They have already made pinchpots from clay and have underglazed and glossed the interiors and oxidised the exteriors.

Canterbury’s 37th Foundation Day Celebration | Chapel Service, Principal’s Address, Special Guest Speaker & Alumnus of the Year Award

Canterbury’s 37th Foundation Day Celebration | Chapel Service, Principal’s Address, Special Guest Speaker & Alumnus of the Year Award

https://youtu.be/osWtsgLw4k4

Today, Canterbury celebrated its 37th Anniversary by reflecting on how far we’ve come, and looking forward to all the 'milestones and magic’ still to come over the next 37 years…

Our official 'whole College’ morning Chapel Service, delivered by College Chaplain Fr Dan Talbot, gave thanks and inspiration to our fast-growing school community on a beautiful autumn day – wishing us all a Happy Birthday and joyful reflections.

This was followed by a special presentation from Principal Mr Dan Walker – who saluted our amazing founding staff’s incredible vision, efforts and enthusiasm back in 1985-87 to get this actual school up and running.

Then our very popular special guest speaker Mr Gordon Royall – Canterbury’s Dean of School (Secondary), Director of Activities and Secondary Teacher (1986 – 2000) – addressed staff and students about his 14 years here, the College motto, and his favourite memories from decades ago.

As per our annual Foundation Day tradition, we finished the ceremony by proudly announcing the recipient of the prestigious 'Alumnus of the Year' Award for 2024.

So hearty congratulations to Mrs Jane Dionysius (nee Hampson) – our 2003 School Captain and current Brisbane Airport Corporation Executive General Manager of Human Resources.

A profile story on Jane’s esteemed career and community charity work will follow shortly.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to all who joined with us on campus – both past and present staff and students – to celebrate Canterbury's 37th birthday together.

And special acknowledgement to those student leaders who spoke on stage and those who performed beautifully in the choir.

Year 6 Bridge Builders Program: Student Mediators Training | Video

Year 6 Bridge Builders Program: Student Mediators Training | Video

https://youtu.be/cXCx0LoISGs

Today, select Year 6 students participated in our special Bridge Builders Program performing Mediators Training.

They focused on equipping fellow students with the interpersonal skills to resolve conflicts on their own.

This Monday, they will apply these handy skills in the ‘real world’, by teaching younger students how to handle playground disputes themselves – without adult intervention.

Relationships are an essential part of school and life.

Learning how to make healthy friendships and manage difficult relationships are essential life skills for all ages.

Now conflict is a normal part of any community, however, unresolved or poorly resolved conflict, can cause children to feel stressed and separated from others.

It can also reduce their ability to be learners.

Some children are growing up more confident in operating technical devices than dealing with frustration, developing flexible thinking, or problem-solving challenging relationships.

So Canterbury is equipping our students with the tools to deal with everyday conflict and reduce bullying through this program.

The sessions explore the following skills:

• Understanding Choices – the difference between conflict and bullying.

• Responses – the physiological and neural reactions to conflict or bullying.

• Growing Resilience Skills.

• Managing Conflict.

We also invite parents and carers to attend our Empowered For Life: Bridge Builders Program – Parents/Carers Information Session happening THIS Monday afternoon:
