On Friday 20 June, Canterbury College marked the final day of Term 2 with its biggest community event of the year, ‘United Nations Day’.
Now in its fifth year, the celebration has grown significantly from its humble beginnings in 2020.
The day featured a vibrant array of food stalls prepared by families, offering traditional dishes from across Africa, Europe, the Pacific, Asia, and more.
The festivities began with a First Nations Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony, performed by the local Indigenous Mununjali and Logan Elders.
This was followed by the Parade of Nations Flag Ceremony, where students proudly carried flags representing their cultural heritage.
A vibrant 2.5-hour performance schedule showcased music, dance, and songs from countries including Samoa, New Zealand, South Korea, the Philippines, India, Africa, and many more – all choreographed by students with help from family and friends.
In addition, students from Years 5–12 came together to present a cultural fashion parade, proudly showcasing traditional attire from around the world.
Guests also enjoyed a range of cultural activities, including Indigenous weaving, henna tattoos, and arts and crafts.
This year’s United Nations Day was a powerful reminder of Canterbury’s rich diversity and inclusive spirit.
A big thank you to all the families, VIP guests, and students who supported and contributed to making this event such a success.
We were also pleased to welcome the Mayor of Logan, Jon Raven, who visited during the celebrations and showed his support for our vibrant multicultural community.

Year 9 Science on the Go! Incursion
Year 9 Science on the Go! Incursion
On Wednesday 17 June, our Year 9 students had the exciting opportunity to participate in a vibrant science incursion led by Mr Sidney Hooker from Griffith University, as part of the 'Science on the GO!' program.
This initiative was designed to engage students with a series of visual and hands-on experiments, sparking their curiosity and enthusiasm for science.
Throughout the session, Sid demonstrated various scientific principles through captivating experiments that not only entertained but also educated the students.
These activities were carefully chosen to prepare the students for their upcoming assessment celebrating Science Week 2025!
Next term, the Year 9 students will have the chance to present scaled down, yet equally intriguing scientific experiments to our Junior School students as part of Science Week.
These shows have proven in the past to be important memories for both the Junior school students and Year 9s and helps foster a sense of mentorship and collaboration.
The positive reactions and enthusiasm from our Year 9 students were evident, as they eagerly participated and asked insightful questions.
This experience highlighted the engaging and fascinating nature of science as a subject, and the importance of practical, hands-on learning in fostering a deeper understanding of scientific concepts.
Overall, the 'Science on the GO!' demonstration proved to be a resounding success, leaving our students inspired and excited about their future scientific endeavours.

Students from Prep to Year 6 performed for their parents, carers, and families, many playing on stage for the very first time.
It was a great opportunity for them to share what they’ve been learning in their piano lessons and to grow their confidence in a supportive setting.
The recital is part of Canterbury’s Studio Tuition Performing Arts Program, which is open to students from the Early Learning Centre (ELC) through to Year 12.
Led by skilled specialist instructors, the program offers individual and small group lessons in Dance, Voice, Piano, Guitar, as well as Orchestra and Band instruments.

Year 3 Science Excursion to Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary | Photo Gallery
Year 3 students recently visited Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary as an engaging introduction to their Science unit on living and non-living things.
Exploring Australian animals in their natural habitats provided students with a valuable, hands-on learning experience.
They enjoyed stroking a koala and a lizard, observing a variety of animals up close, and feeding the kangaroos, which was once again a clear favourite!

Year 8 Outdoor Education - Wrap Up & Photo Snapshot
On Monday 26 May – Wednesday 28 May, Year 8 Students headed to Brooyar for their Outdoor Education experience. Situated on the Mary River, just outside of Gympie, students enjoyed an action-packed program, while being with their friends and witnessing the picturesque sunrises and sunsets over the campgrounds.
Decision making was the central theme of the Year 8 Outdoor Education program, with students having to navigate and make decisions to the benefit of their group, while also stepping out of their comfort zone. Activities ranged from archery, stand up paddleboarding and canoeing, gold panning, lure making and abseiling the majestical cliffs of Point Pure.
A big thank you must be extended to Mr Jon Paul, Ms Bridget Ward, Mr Declan McBride, Mr Daniel Clark, Ms Kathy Simpson, Ms Danielle Johnston, Mr Glen Walker and Mr James Jenkins for helping facilitate this Outdoor Education experience for our students.
Please enjoy a few snapshots from Year 8 Outdoor Education. The full gallery will be uploaded on MyCC soon.
