2024 Canterbury College Christmas Appeal | Supporting Anglicare Southern Queensland

2024 Canterbury College Christmas Appeal | Supporting Anglicare Southern Queensland

A message from our College Chaplain Father Dan Talbot…

Entering the Christmas season, a time of joy, reflection and giving, we have the chance to extend our generosity to those in need.

This year, we are partnering with Anglicare Southern Queensland for our 2024 Canterbury College Christmas Appeal.

Anglicare is a very highly respected charity with over 150 years’ experience providing care and support to vulnerable Queenslanders.

As part of the Anglican Church, Anglicare actively helps those in need, including children in foster care, the elderly, and individuals facing serious hardships.

They live their mission daily through compassionate support, helping the most vulnerable live with dignity and hope.

So we invite you to donate gifts for children in foster care, by placing them under the Christmas trees located in our ELC, Junior School, or Senior School Administration buildings from next week starting Tuesday 29 October.

We are accepting a wide variety of items including:

  • Gift Vouchers for Target, Big W, Myer, Woolworths, Coles and the Dreamworld, Movie World and Wet ‘n’ Wild Theme Parks.
  • Gift Vouchers for music, clothing stores and video games
  • Non-perishable Christmas food items and Christmas-themed treats
  • Board games, LEGO, building blocks, puzzles and activity books
  • Gift Vouchers for movie tickets and books
  • Sporting equipment – including bikes, scooters and skateboards
  • Toys for all age groups.

Please Note: All gifts must be…

  • Labelled for Anglicare Southern Queensland
  • Brand new, unopened and unused
  • Unwrapped, or wrapped in clear cellophane so the contents are visible.

Our Years 8 and 9 students will also pack food items into hampers for families to enjoy during the Christmas season.

For many children in foster care, Christmas can be a difficult time filled with uncertainty.

Your donations will bring joy and hope to these children, showing them that they are genuinely cared for by their local community and not forgotten.

Thank you in advance for sharing the true spirit of Christmas.

Father Dan Talbot
College Chaplain

A message from Anglicare…

“Christmas is a time for giving and sharing joy with loved ones.

It’s a time for giving, a time for reflection, and a time for hope.

Across our services, we have many clients who won’t have friends or family to spend the festive season with.

Clients, who will struggle to provide their children with a Christmas meal, let alone presents or activities these holidays.

You can help make this Christmas bright for someone in need.

By donating a gift, you are letting them know they are not alone.”

The weather is hot but everyone is having a great time.

The other half of our Year 9s not in these photos were in another location exploring Booloumba Creek.

Stay tuned for more photos from our staff on location, as they send them through to Canterbury College HQ…

2024 Music Fest Competition: Gold Awards For Our Junior Singers & Junior School Choir | Event Wrap

On Monday 21 October, our Junior Singers and Junior School Choir delivered impressive performances at Music Fest 2024, held at Iona College, with both groups winning Gold Awards!

Their achievement reflects months of hard work and musical growth as they competed alongside top school ensembles from across Queensland.

Music Fest is an annual event that provides a platform for young musicians to showcase their talents in a supportive concert environment.

Performances are adjudicated by professional musicians from Queensland and interstate, giving students valuable feedback to refine their skills.

We are incredibly proud of our students for their outstanding performances, and for representing Canterbury College with such distinction at this major event.

Our Junior School Strings (Years 4-6) are competing today (Wednesday 23 October) so we wish them good luck!

Year 7 Food and Hospitality: Food Safety & Workplace Health & Safety Lessons

Year 7 Food and Hospitality: Food Safety & Workplace Health & Safety Lessons

Today our Year 7 Food and Hospitality students transformed into crime scene investigators in a food safety, and workplace health and safety lesson led by Miss Kim Cooper in our campus kitchen classroom.

Faced with a fictional victim’s mysterious kitchen injuries, students combed the scene for any clues.

They uncovered critical hazards – improper knife washing, risky food preparation techniques, overlooked allergy precautions, careless tray handling from a hot oven, the risk of salmonella, and spillages – that all contributed to the victim's unfortunate mishaps.

As they pieced together this puzzle scenario, Year 7s gained real-world knowledge about essential kitchen safety and food hygiene practices.

The classroom’s teamwork and sharp hospitality detective skills turned a crucial life lesson into a fun, interactive and far more memorable learning experience.

By the end of the session, students walked away with the confidence to apply these safety practices in any future commercial kitchen they may step into.

Year 10 RACQ Road Safety Program: Driver IQ | Event Wrap & Photo Gallery

Today, our Year 10s took part in the RACQ Driver IQ Program, a free and interactive road safety session, designed to equip young drivers with essential skills for their adult driving journey.

Through engaging presentations, supported by videos and live polls, students gained valuable insights into the responsibilities of both drivers and passengers.

They explored how to handle vehicle breakdowns, avoid accidents, and developed practical strategies to succeed in their driving tests.

The session also focused on building resilience and patience, preparing them for the inevitable challenges they will face in traffic as novice drivers.

This opportunity provided Year 10 students with real-world knowledge and essential skills – an important step toward becoming confident and responsible adult drivers sharing our roads.

Thank you to RACQ for coming on campus and sharing your industry know-how.

Year 12s ‘Farewell’ Extended House Form: ‘Class Of 2024’ Pre-Exams Well-Wishing

Year 12s ‘Farewell’ Extended House Form: ‘Class Of 2024’ Pre-Exams Well-Wishing

This morning, our six Houses held an extended 45-minute Form to bid ‘farewell’ and best wishes to their respective Year 12 housemates, before they depart for Study Week and their big final External Exams.

The Cranmer House Year 12s rang their symbolic bell amidst the Guard of Honour, marking their final gathering with their fellow ‘wolfpack’ members.

Kime House Year 12s reminisced over old College Yearbooks and reflected on their first and last years at Canterbury – recalling friendships, teachers, and experiences throughout their schooling journey.

In Ramsey House, Year 12s led one last House chant, while Temple House Year 11s delivered heartfelt speeches and presented meaningful gifts to their departing Senior housemates.

Goldsworthy House leaders gave ‘thank you’ speeches and received framed messages from younger House students as part of their farewell.

Becket House Year 12s were presented with commemorative pens as a parting gift to mark the special but ‘bittersweet’ occasion.

Today’s event provided a wonderful chance to celebrate our Year 12 students for the time they spent with peers and staff on campus, as they begin their closing educational stages with us.

We wish them great success in their upcoming final exams!

Please see our composite photo gallery HERE and video covering the morning’s activities…
