2024 Interschool Queensland da Vinci Academic Decathlon | Full Event Wrap & Photo Gallery - Great Results!

2024 Interschool Queensland da Vinci Academic Decathlon | Full Event Wrap & Photo Gallery - Great Results!

This week, Canterbury College sent three Senior School teams over to Saint Joseph’s Nudgee College, to compete in the 2024 Interschool Queensland da Vinci Decathlon.

I am incredibly proud to share some fantastic results that our teams achieved across the two Senior School competition days:

  • Our Year 7 team placed FIRST in the English paper.
  • Our Year 8/9 team placed FIRST in the Creative Producers performance.
  • Our Year 11 team placed THIRD in the Engineering category.

This major academic event involved students competing in teams of eight against 52 other school teams – making a total of 1,248 students participating across the three days!

The da Vinci Decathlon is a yearly academic competition designed to challenge and stimulate the minds of school students.

Students compete in teams of eight across ten disciplines: Engineering, Mathematics and Chess, Code Breaking, Art and Poetry, Science, English, Ideation, Creative Producers, Cartography and Legacy.

Each category not only demanded a deep subject knowledge, but also the ability to think critically and solve problems collaboratively.

Our teams have been practicing past papers since the beginning of Term 2 for two afternoons per week, demonstrating a huge amount of effort and teamwork.

These results follow our group of eight Year 5s and eight Year 6s who competed on Tuesday, with Canterbury’s Year 5 team placing third in the English section.

Students looking to get involved in similar activities in the future, should please contact their relevant Lumina Coordinator – our Canterbury program which supports high-performing students.

2024 Tennis Queensland Primary Schools Cup: NOMINATE NOW!

2024 Tennis Queensland Primary Schools Cup: NOMINATE NOW!

Tennis Queensland’s annual Primary Schools Tennis Cup is coming up later this year, so we are taking nominations from ANY Logan or Canterbury College Junior School students, interested in participating in this prestigious sporting event.

And you don’t have to be a current Canterbury Taipans Tennis Club Member to nominate.

The Tennis Queensland Primary Schools Cup (previously the Brisbane International Schools Challenge) is a mixed-team tennis competition open to all schools within Queensland.

Every school has the opportunity to nominate teams at Regional Qualification events, with the winners of each tie invited to compete at the State Final, to be held at the Brisbane Tennis Centre.

The competition runs over three different categories:

1. Red Ball involves students in Year 4 and below, and schools can enter teams in Division A – Mixed and Girls Only and/or Division B – Participation.

Red Ball is an entry-level competition that encourages participation, and is a great starting point for all players, with teams consisting of 8-10 students.

2. Orange Ball involves students in Year 5 and below, and schools can enter teams in a Mixed-Division competition that involves teams of 4-5 students.

3. Green Ball involves students in Year 6 and below, and schools can enter teams in a Mixed-Division competition that involves teams of 4-5 students.

Each team representing Canterbury College will need a Team Manager, so we please request the support of parents and carers to act as Team Managers, to help facilitate transport etc.

Canterbury sits in the South Coast (Gold Coast) catchment, so please see our Regional Qualification date of Friday 25 October on the Tennis Queensland calendar.

Doing well in this competition means your child/ren will gain recognition and the attention of Queensland tennis selectors, and potentially National Academy coaches.

Plus it will boost their confidence and improve their tennis skills, while they compete with the best players in the Sunshine State.

So I highly recommend participation in the Primary Schools Cup.

Please see below two links with more competition information, and contact me to nominate your child/ren – Head Tennis Coach Charlie Tsai –

UTR Match-Play Tennis Summary

Universal Tennis Rating (UTR) Match-Play Tennis is a fun and social way for youth to get into tennis OR build upon the basic tennis skills they already have, or are currently learning.

The low-compression balls, smaller rackets and modified courts make learning tennis easier for smaller bodies over four stages – Red Ball, Orange Ball, Green Ball and Yellow Ball.

Best of all, young players can progress through these coloured ball stages at their own pace, with Match-Play catering to EVERY level from beginners up to seasoned competitors.

Newcomers gradually learn all the basic tennis strokes, rally strategies, and match skills and drills; plus even how to score individual games, sets and matches.

Experienced participants enjoy the opportunity to practice and bolster their competitive tennis play with other like-minded individuals.

Importantly, all young players will learn to embrace sportsmanship and competition in a positive and safe environment.

UTR Match-Play Tennis Season Overview

  • Short tennis seasons where you can opt-in at any time.
  • Includes End-Of-Term Finals with medal presentations.
  • Play Singles and Doubles each week.

Colour Ball Formats

Red Ball Timed Matches | 20 Minutes Max
Orange Ball First To Win 4 Games | 40-40 Next Point Wins Game
Green Ball Singles: First To Win 6 Games | Doubles: First To Win 4 Games
Yellow Ball First To Win 6 Games

General Rules

  • Parents or carers must stay off the courts as supervisors will assist with any issues.
  • Any participants not playing will be required to assist as supervisors for current matches.
  • When playing to six games, a tie-break occurs at 5-5, with the first to reach seven points.
  • When playing to four games, a tie-break occurs at 3-3, with the first to reach five points.
  • If the ball is ‘out’ = your hand goes up, if the ball is ‘in’ your hand points to the ground.

Benefits

The Canterbury Taipans value competing hard for every point, enjoying winning and being gracious in defeat, while trying to learn something from each experience.

Winning and losing can stir strong emotions for young players and it’s something that is good for them to experience in a friendly and supportive setting.

Some other great reasons to begin competing:

  • You get to practice what you’ve learned during your regular tennis lessons.
  • It’s fun and based around making friends and socialising.
  • It’s a great way to learn the rules around tennis while developing match strategies and tactics.
  • It’s excellent for physical activity while improving your tennis, motor and movement skills.
  • It helps develop self-confidence and a sense of accomplishment.
  • It teaches the value of effort and working towards your goals.
  • And naturally it improves your Universal Tennis Rating (UTR).
