Canterbury Junior Ethics Olympiad | Online Interschool Competition Currently Underway!
It’s an exciting day for learning as select students in Years 5-6 dive into the Junior Ethics Olympiad.
The Junior Ethics Olympiad is an online interschool competition held across Australia and the wider region, where Canterbury Lumina students present ethically-sound arguments to answer questions about six different scenarios.
Unlike a debate, teams need to acknowledge others’ contributions and can agree or disagree with them, while also presenting possible alternate views to their own arguments.
The Canterbury Junior Ethics Olympiad team this year consists of Khushi Patil, Emma Kay, Haeun Bae, Pegella Beh and Ruhani Sayan, and they have worked well as a team in coaching sessions to prepare for this event.
Lumina is our special College program dedicated to further empowering our high-performing Junior School students.

Year 11 Building And Construction Class Makes New Seating In Canterbury's ANZAC Garden
Year 11 Building And Construction Class Makes New Seating In Canterbury's ANZAC Garden
Yesterday, our Year 11 Building and Construction class finished off the practical requirements of their module on Site Preparations and Foundations.
Students have been learning about methods used in the construction industry to construct formwork to be used in concreting.
The Year 11 class have been trained in the use of a cement mixer, concrete placement and using hand trowels.
They are also trying a less used form of reinforcement in the concrete - Glass Fibre Reinforced Concrete (GFRC), over more traditional steel reinforcement.
The students have been enjoying applying their skills in real world applications, by constructing new seating to replace existing seats in our Canterbury ANZAC Garden.
Nice work gentlemen, and I think we would all agree, the finished product looks fantastic.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SPARK is an elective-based 'hands-on' curriculum for Years 5 and 6 students unique to Canterbury.
Each semester, our students choose a particular subject to study.
Then, students from both year levels are combined into the same classroom and taught by relevant staff.
SPARK is about building curiosity, encouraging students to try something new, and providing an exceptional opportunity to embark on their learning journey as part of their 'World Ready' Canterbury education.
When does SPARK occur?
SPARK happens once weekly, with students encouraged to continue learning beyond the classroom.
How does SPARK link to the curriculum?
SPARK focuses on the Australian Curriculum's general capabilities, critical and creative thinking, personal and social capability, ethical understanding and intercultural understanding.
How can I see my child's learning?
The Junior School hosts a learning exhibition at the end of each semester, where all students will have something to exhibit based on their SPARK sessions.

Friday's 2024 Under Eights Day was full of fun activities to celebrate this year's theme: 'Connecting To Culture Through Play'.
We had our local Fire and Police Services sharing some valuable information with our students.
There were also dress-ups, face painting, storytime, constructing recyclables, crafts and much more to keep everyone entertained.
Our students were thrilled by a magic performance in our CEC featuring bubble tricks.
A few lucky students even got to step inside giant bubbles!
Wrapping up their exciting day was a good ol' fashioned disco, where our Prep to Year 2 students danced the school day away with the Macarena, rock-style air guitar and a long line of limbo.
What a day!

Our Becket House students are leading our Community Service initiative with Rosies: Friends On The Street.
Yesterday, they hosted Rosies' volunteers, who set up a mini Street Outreach outside the CEC.
The van served hot Milos and offered a lunchtime Campus Connections opportunity for Years 6 and 11 students.
The volunteers also joined us for Assembly and collaborated with our Year 9 students in Service-learning workshops.
