Canterbury Theatre Company Shines Bright In 2024 Scene Project Spotlight!

Canterbury Theatre Company Shines Bright In 2024 Scene Project Spotlight!

Last night, our Canterbury Theatre Company students lit up the stage of our Performing Arts Centre with their 2024 Scene Project performance, captivating family and friends.

The Scene Project, run by Queensland Theatre, offers students more than just a chance to perform—it's an incredible opportunity for students to dive deep into the creative process, learning how to turn a script into a live production.

From rehearsals to the final presentation, students gain hands-on experience in a professional setting, honing their skills in collaboration, interpretation, and live performance.

This year, they tackled Flowers in Antarctica by Wendy Mocke, a powerful piece where Whales and Orcas must unite against a foreign species threatening to take over Earth from the sea.

Through their performances, students explored themes of environmental change, conflict, and unity, all while showcasing their developing theatrical skills.

#ThrowbackThursday

Take a look back at the unforgettable moments from Saturday’s Laurie Maetam Sign Unveiling and Oval Dedication Ceremony, where we officially renamed our Main Oval in honour of Mr Laurie Maetam.

Mr Laurie Maetam dedicated his career to our school as a Cricket Coach, Science Teacher, and Head of Science from 1991 until his retirement in 2023.

It was a great event to show our gratitude for his many years of service.

This morning, a select group of our Senior School students proudly represented Canterbury College at the Beenleigh Yatala Junior Chamber of Commerce (BYJCC) Breakfast, hosted at our own Canterbury Functions Centre.

Supported by the Beenleigh Yatala Chamber of Commerce, these breakfasts provide an excellent opportunity for our students, along with peers from nearby schools, to explore future career pathways, engage in community initiatives, and connect with local business ventures and like-minded individuals.

Our students also heard from inspiring guest keynote speakers:

The next BYJCC Breakfast will be hosted by Livingstone Christian College on Thursday 17 October 2024 from 6:45am - 8:30am.

2024 Interhouse Public Speaking Competition | Event Recap & Photos

2024 Interhouse Public Speaking Competition | Event Recap & Photos

Last Friday, we revived the Interhouse Public Speaking Competition, which was last held in November 2021.

This event not only offered our students a chance to refine their public speaking skills, but also gave them the creative freedom to express their opinions and ideas.

It was an exciting way for students to earn points for their House, both through strong performances and active participation.

Each House had two speakers — one representing Years 7-9 and the other representing Years 10-12 — each delivering a speech of up to three minutes.

The topics they tackled included:

  • Actions Speak Louder Than Words
  • What Is Reality?
  • Gen Z vs Gen Alpha
  • The Language Of Music
  • The Importance Of Having A Hobby
  • The Person Who Was...
  • The ‘Truth’ Isn’t Always The Truth
  • Being Selfish Can Be A Good Thing
  • The Year That Was...

The adjudicators of this competition were Teacher Mr Declan McBride, College Chaplain Dan Talbot, and a few members of the Year 12 Debating Team.

The results are currently being tallied and will soon contribute to the Canterbury Cup overall standings.

The photos from this event can be found on our Facebook Page HERE.
