2021 All Schools Touch Football Tournament Wrap: Wed 6 – Sun 10 Oct

2021 All Schools Touch Football Tournament Wrap: Wednesday 6 – Sunday 10 October

Canterbury College re-joined the All Schools Touch Football Competition in 2021 for an action-packed five-day event, involving 424 teams playing nearly 2,000 games, and bringing around 6,500 junior athletes, coaches and referees to the beautiful Gold Coast.

The Canterbury Taipans were represented by our Under 13 and Under 15 Girls Teams coached by Mr Boon and Mr Enelaki, as well as our Under 18 Mixed Team coached by Mr Sione.

Across a number of pool games, the Under 13 Girls Team played some wonderful touch and won three and lost three of their games, while the Under 15 Girls won two of their six games, both coming in confident fashion on Day Two.

The Under 18 Mixed Team bounced back from a first-up loss, to progress through the pool stages undefeated, and qualify for the Top 16 - playing Our Lady’s from Dalby and just losing narrowly 6-5.

It was a very positive return to the All Schools scene, and one that was characterised by the happy faces and positive efforts by all our students who participated.

NB: Some really great Canterbury Taipans tournament match photos were taken by Sarah Boon Photography and posted to her Facebook Page here.

Year 11 Leadership Day Reflection Article - Sarah Love, Year 11

Year 11 Leadership Day Reflection Article - Sarah Love, Year 11 - Becket House 6

Year 11 Leadership Day, held on Wednesday 20 October by the UPP team, was an incredible experience for me and my fellow peers.

The day was filled with many team-building activities, which not only helped with our leadership skills, but also allowed us to develop more connections with the rest of our cohort.

Through many of the activities we completed, we were able to learn more about ourselves and others around us, and mostly how to be a proficient leader.

The day had many highlights for us all, but for me, the best part about the day was getting to see everyone really come together, separate our differences and truly work as a team.

Getting to look around the room and see everyone getting involved and being included, truly showed the spirit and strength of our cohort as a whole.

We truly acted as one, united as a team, able to complete activities together, support and understand each other, while also having fun.

One of the key takeaways throughout the day included knowing that we don’t need to have a title or that labelled captain 'badge' to be a leader, as together, we are all a team that influences the younger grades.

In saying this, another important point we focused on was that we always have an influence on others around us, even those we don’t know.

We have learnt that no matter what we are doing, someone is always watching!

So we should always do our best to be the best version of ourselves, to then have the best impact on others.

Throughout the day, I really learnt a lot about my ability to be a leader without having a leadership position.

Not only I, but everyone was able to help out, suggest ideas and get involved - all while being comfortable and enjoying ourselves.

The ability to voice our opinions and ideas - without feeling judged or unheard - was something as a cohort that we did really well.

We will definitely make this prevalent within our next year as Year 12 leaders.

What I think is the most important takeaway - not only for us, but for the whole school, is that regardless of the age or goal, anyone can be a leader by simply doing your best.

It may not be easy, but you always have an impact on others around you and the ability to make others become the best version of themselves.

Coming into Year 12 in the next year, I think as a grade, we have become much closer and have created a great atmosphere for our final year together.

The UPP team really improved our abilities to come together and even went out of their way to say: “This is the kindest group we have ever worked with.”

- Sarah Love, Year 11 - Becket House 6

Volleyball QLD: Junior & Year 11 Schools Cup Results 🏐

Volleyball QLD: Junior & Year 11 Schools Cup Results 🏐

Five of our Canterbury volleyball teams competed at the combined Volleyball Queensland Junior and Year 11 Schools Cup which took place from Friday 22 - Sunday 24 October just gone.

Year 7 Boys

Our Year 7 Boys unfortunately lost their repechage to qualify for the top eight in a thrilling 16-14 final set.

They proceeded to finish 11th out of 24 teams in the Division 1 competition.

A great effort for their first QLD competition.

Year 8 Boys

This team competed in the Honours competition, playing against the 'best of the best' in their age group.

The boys experienced a shaky start, but found their footing late on the second day of competition, winning against Cleveland.

They continued their winning streak from then on, finishing in 7th place out of 11 teams.

Year 7/8 Combined Girls

Our Combined Girls team who also played in Division 1, found themselves playing against some quality opponents.

Despite being struck down by injuries, they persevered and won against some of the more challenging teams to finish in 8th place.

Year 11 Girls

Consisting of two Year 9s, two Year 10s and five Year 11s, our Year 11 Girls team finished in 5th place.

With only a few training sessions together as a team, their progression throughout the competition was second to none.

Playing some fantastic defence in their final match, after a quick 'how to dive on wooden floors' lesson, the girls should be very happy with their results.

Year 11 Boys

Our Year 11 Boys competed against a tough Division 1 pool, finishing narrowly in 3rd seed.

Both the 1st and 2nd seed teams went on to play in the Grand Final match, which unfortunately meant that our boys could only finish in 5th place at best.

The boys played fast-paced, controlled volleyball throughout the competition, never giving up without a fight.

They finished in 5th place, losing narrowly in two matches to Woodridge and Iona.

Overall it was a great performance by all teams, finishing mid table.

An excellent gauge to prove that our Canterbury Volleyball teams are competitive at the highest level of school volleyball across all age groups.

Congratulations to all our Taipans Volleyballers on a great long sporting weekend! 🐍

Coordinator of Volleyball
