A Message From Lilly Rider, Kaylee Tamala & Joshua Fullard

As student ambassadors for The Sudsy Challenge here at Canterbury, it has been such a rewarding experience to witness this initiative grow each year.

In our first year we started with only 12 participants, so it’s amazing to see how many of you have already signed up to join the challenge this year.

It has been a pleasure to work alongside like-minded individuals who share the same passion to raise awareness, so that people experiencing homelessness can access free laundry, warm showers, and genuine connections.

Last year was our biggest yet!

We were named Australia’s top fundraisers, collecting over $37,000, which provided over 1,500 loads of laundry to those in need.

In addition to raising these much-needed funds, it is more important that we understand what makes this charity initiative vital to our community.

Orange Sky Australia is a not-for-profit organisation that provides free laundry and shower services to those doing it tough in our community.

But while these services are important, it is the genuine conversations that allow those in Australia to positively connect with others, by sharing their experiences and feeling they are being heard.

Each year, The Sudsy Challenge takes part over three days.

So many of you may be wondering: WHY THREE DAYS?

Well, it took Orange Sky Australia co-founders Nic and Lucas three days (and three sets of washing machines and dryers) to get their first laundry van named ‘Sudsy’ working.

On Day Three, a friend named Jordan used the free mobile laundry service and taught Nic and Lucas that while clean clothes were important, it was the conversation and connection that mattered more.

So come on Canterbury!

Let’s work together to raise funds and awareness for homelessness in Australia and get ready to keep your orange kit on for three straight days this September.

We are encouraging all students in Years 5-12, all Canterbury staff and Canterbury families to join our Sudsy Team.

We will be completing this challenge in our last three days of Term 3 from Wednesday 11 – Friday 13 September.

It costs $48 to get started and receive your bright orange The Sudsy Challenge t-shirt to wear to school over those last three days.

Julie-Ann Gaske Farewell Celebration | Our Junior School Teacher (1998 – 2024) = 27 Years!

Julie-Ann Gaske Farewell Celebration | Our Junior School Teacher (1998 – 2024) = 27 Years!

A slightly different #ThrowBackThursday #TBT today with a current ‘historical’ figure – meant with all due respect!

At Wednesday lunchtime, we marked the bittersweet farewell for one of our favourite long-time teachers Mrs Julie-Ann Gaske, in our Canterbury Functions Centre.

For 27 years, Julie has been a dedicated and inspiring educator, who’s been passionately teaching and shaping young minds in our Canterbury Junior School since 1998!

Our always beautifully dressed and colourful scarf-loving teacher has taught across many primary year level cohorts over her busy career.

Senior College Executives and Junior School staff attended Julie-Ann’s official farewell to say their goodbyes, and celebrate the significant impact she has made here at Canterbury for well over two decades.

When Julie-Ann commenced here in 1998, our Australian Prime Minister was John Howard, the top-rated movies were Titanic and Saving Private Ryan, and the best-selling song was ‘The Cup Of Life’ by Latino popstar Ricky Martin for that year’s FIFA World Cup.

How time flies… Wishing you all the best from everyone here at Canterbury College!

Please let us know your favourite Julie-Ann Gaske memories in the Comments section on the related Facebook Post HERE.

Year 10 General Maths Class | With Assistant Head of Mathematics and Commerce Faculty Miss Elizabeth Schluter

Year 10 General Maths Class | With Assistant Head of Mathematics and Commerce Faculty Miss Elizabeth Schluter

Our Year 10 General Mathematics students are currently mastering linear equations, a foundational component of algebra that leads into future STEM-related disciplines.

A linear equation represents a straight line on a graph and has the form: y = mx + c (or y = mx + b in some regions), where m is the slope and c (or b) is the y-intercept.

It's used to describe relationships with a constant rate of change (slope) between two variables.

Professions in finance, data analysis, engineering and other industries frequently use linear equations to model relationships, predict outcomes and analyse data trends.

Understanding linear equations builds academic problem-solving skills, improves logical thinking, and is essential for tackling more complex mathematics and real-world problems.

Enjoy our video where Miss Elizabeth Schluter simply explains the world of linear equations and their real-world applications.

National Science Week: Science Factory – 50 Interactive Science & Technology Based Activities | Photo Gallery, Highlights Video & Event Wrap

National Science Week: Science Factory – 50 Interactive Science & Technology Based Activities | Photo Gallery & Event Wrap

Through Tuesday’s challenging and fun learning activities, students were encouraged to obtain the skills needed to analyse and respond through inquiry, imagination and innovation.

Science aims to ensure that students develop a means of expanding their curiosity and willingness to explore, ask questions and speculate on the changing world in which they live.

So 50 interactive science and technology-based activities were set up – from hearing heartbeats with stethoscopes, to animal x-rays and creating wind with a bucket and elastic – every activity featured easy-to-follow instructions, making each session a guided discovery lesson.

Students were able to create, invent and improve their overall thinking skills in a fun and educational way.

The Science ACARA (Australian Curriculum, Assessment & Reporting Authority) Curriculum emphasises the development of scientific knowledge, understanding and skills to help students explore and make sense of their world.

This Science Factory ‘expo’ can be related to the Science ACARA Curriculum in several ways:

  1. Growing scientific inquiry skills by encouraging students to ask questions, hypothesise and investigate phenomena.
  2. Fostering a scientific mindset and developing critical thinking skills in students.
  3. Encouraging students to use their scientific knowledge creatively and critically.
