History Week: Trivia Challenge | Photo Gallery & Video

This week during lunchtimes, our senior students have been attending our History Week’s fun educational sessions, in the Senior School Library’s Digital Hub.

On Wednesday, students teamed up with friends to test their History knowledge, answering questions about topics that ranged from the Egyptian pharaohs, to the Australian Federation, and right up to the 2022 Canterbury College School Captains – can you name them too?

If you would like to test your own History trivia knowledge, we have attached the slides HERE – Good Luck!

2024 Junior School Public Speaking Competition Finals: Lumina Program | Event Wrap & Photo Gallery

2024 Junior School Public Speaking Competition Finals: Lumina Program | Event Wrap & Photo Gallery

Last Thursday, we held our 2024 Canterbury College Junior School Public Speaking Competition in the Junior School Library. ️

As part of our Junior School’s Lumina Program – which supports high-performing students, the Years 3-6 finalists aimed to entertain, persuade or inform their audience with a particular topic.

This practical experience gave our young students the opportunity to demonstrate the impact and influence of language on their audience, while also building confidence speaking in public, as well as essential communication skills.

Our judges – Principal Dan Walker, Head Of Junior School Karen Roman, Assistant Head Of Junior School (Learning) Alisha Richardson and Junior School’s Public Speaking & Debating Coordinator Courtney Jones – joined the Lumina Program Head Jonathon Wheatley, to assess the various speeches based on their structure, pacing, volume, clarity and the use of technical or emotive vocabulary.

Additionally, the students’ body language played a crucial role in enhancing their spoken delivery.

Congratulations to these talented students for stepping up in front of senior College staff and participating in something that many find quite daunting.

2024 Young Business Leaders Program | Halfway Update

2024 Young Business Leaders Program | Halfway Update

The Young Business Leaders Program is now halfway through its 8-week course.

This co-curricular activity has been running throughout Term 2 on Wednesday afternoons after school in N Block.

This specialised entrepreneurial education compels students to formulate ideas and think critically, while also gaining valuable real-world commercial experience.

After a month of foundational business learning and initial project development, students are now focusing on the final stages of ideation, design, development, marketing and budgeting.

It’s exciting to see some students returning for their second year in this course, to further develop their own small business products or services from 2023.

The program will culminate in a special Breakfast Showcase event on Thursday 13 June, where the students will present their entrepreneurial business to the wider Canterbury Community.

The Young Business Leaders Program is organised by BOP Industries with the support of event partner the Beenleigh Yatala Junior Chamber of Commerce and event sponsors Bendigo Bank, Quota Beenleigh Inc, Rotary Club of Beenleigh, Logan City Council, Logan Office of Economic Development and new Logan Mayor Jon Raven.

We look forward to seeing these enthusiastic young entrepreneurs at their Breakfast Showcase in a few weeks’ time with businesses including: baked goods, handballs, cleaning attachments, community bracelets and more.

UPDATE: Junior School Construction Project - Bareibun Precinct

UPDATE: Junior School Construction Project - Bareibun Precinct

Dear Parents and Students,

Except for some bad weather in January and February, the major construction project in the Junior School has been progressing well.

At this stage, our builders are anticipating the construction will be completed in late August / early September, for a practical completion and handover in advance of the September school holidays.

This means that Year 1 and 2 classes will likely be moving into C Block (Year 2 on the 2nd floor and Year 1 on the ground floor) over these September holidays.

After construction of C Block is completed, further minor demolition will be required, and the Junior School Meadow restoration and Easterly Street carpark and set-down/drop-off area will be completed in Term 4.

Therefore, the whole area will be completed for the start of the 2025 school year.

  • Prep classrooms will receive a minor facelift in advance of a full refurbishment at the end of 2026.
  • Outside School Hours Care (OSHC) will be moving permanently into a new space from January 2025.
  • The amount of open play space will increase significantly as a result of these changes.
  • The covered outdoor area (the roof which can now be seen on the skyline) will also add 500sqm of sheltered play space for the Junior School.

We are excited for the opening of this major new space for our students.

As well as new classrooms for Year 1 and 2, there will be a specialist Library for ELC to Year 3, a STEM specialist classroom, a dedicated Dance and Drama room, new toilets for students and staff, and an additional new entrance to the Junior School from Easterly Street.

Additional carparking and a larger set-down and pick-up zone will also be engineered on the Easterly Street entrance.

Regards

Dan Walker

Principal

UPDATE: Canterbury Craft Collective - 66/100 Hats DONE! | 3:30pm – 4:45pm, Every Tuesday After School: Terms 2–4 @ Senior School Library

What an incredible response from the students regarding our new little Canterbury Craft Collective Club.

With their help, we have already made it to 66 hats/beanies to donate to Rosies: Friends On The Street on our big tally poster goal of 100.

But now our bank of yarn is actually starting to run low…

So if any families have any unwanted balls of wool to donate, that would be much appreciated!

Here is a photo of our tally poster so far, and what my desk looks like at the moment.

We are based in the Senior School Library for any wool drop-offs – thank you!

Temple House: ‘Containers For Change’ | Event Wrap, Photo Gallery & Video

Temple House: ‘Containers For Change’ | Event Wrap, Photo Gallery & Video

Last week, Temple House lived up to its ‘green character’ by leading sustainability workshops for Years 7-12.

Students were educated on the difference between recyclable and general waste, followed by a competitive rubbish sorting mini-game race.

As part of the ‘Wave Of Change’ school initiative, students are encouraged to recycle 10 cent bottles, poppers and cans into designated ‘Containers For Change’ bins, with Junior School getting their own bins next week…Go Green Team!

The funds raised by Temple’s initiatives will be committed towards providing our school grounds with more local native plants and the resources to build a ‘Yarning Circle’.

This will both recognise and honour the connection to the Indigenous Mununjali and Gugingin Country that Canterbury resides on.

Traditionally, gathering in a Yarning Circle creates a space for sharing stories, histories, knowledge and experiences.

A Yarning Circle also provides a safe environment for people to listen and respond to each other, fostering accountability, respect, honesty and trust.

This project involves working closely with our local Aboriginal Elders to find the right location for the Yarning Circle.

Fundraising has already kicked off with Term One’s Saint Patrick’s Day Bake Sale and Wednesday’s Doughnut Day, and now the ‘Containers For Change’ initiative will continue this financial momentum throughout the rest of the year.

Years 11 & 12 Film, Television & New Media Workshop: Mr Stewart Tyrell - Essential Screen Skills Qld: Gateway To Industry Schools Program | Photo Gallery

Today, our Years 11 and 12 Film, Television & New Media students participated in a day-long workshop incursion hosted by Mr Stewart Tyrell – an experienced filmmaker and educator with the Griffith Film School.

Sessions centred around post-production work, exploring both cinematography and post-production practices, with a primary focus on using Adobe Premiere Pro – a universally popular video editing software in the film and television industry.

A wide range of topics were covered, including experimental editing techniques, special effects, plus motion and time manipulation techniques.

This very hands-on experience gave the class an opportunity to refine their editing skills, while gaining a deeper insight into the power of editing software, to create engaging high-quality content.

Thank you Mr Stewart Tyrell for sharing your wealth of professional expertise with our grateful students.

Stewart’s valuable workshop was made possible by the brilliant people at Essential Screen Skills Qld.

They are the Gateway To Industry Schools Program body Canterbury has officially partnered with, and Stewart was here on campus representing them.
