1:1 Technology

All Years 4-12 students receive a 1:1 Microsoft Surface Pro laptop computer with keyboard, stylus, carry bag, safety case/screen protector, 3-year warranty, insurance plan, and fully installed software with licensing.

Our 1:1 Device Program + Digital Curriculum = World Ready Students

Canterbury’s 1:1 Device Program empowers students in their learning journey, helping them gain understanding, organise their knowledge, and present their ideas effectively.

At our College, we take pride in being a Microsoft Showcase AND Microsoft Lighthouse School, ensuring that we stay at the forefront of digital curriculums and utilise technology efficiently.

To provide safe and secure access to engaging multimedia lessons, online resources and digital educational materials, we equip students in Years 3-12 with a 1:1 device, allowing those in Years 4-12 to take their devices home.

Students will generally receive a new device every three years in Years 4, 7 and 10 – typically the latest Microsoft Surface Pro laptop computer.

This is the very same device that our Canterbury teachers use.

It means our students (and staff) are always working on current devices under full warranty, capable of handling the growing demands of evolving digital learning (and teaching) opportunities.

Digital literacy is one of the most important skills in modern society, and is crucially required of students as they move from school into tertiary studies and the workforce.

By embedding technology across our curriculum, we empower students to develop essential skills in a digital context, making them ‘World Ready’.

Canterbury’s Inhouse 1:1 Device Program vs Computer Retailers’ Devices

Sometimes a myth circulates among parents that a Microsoft Surface Pro laptop can be purchased from an electronics retailer and onboarded more cheaply than our school’s own 1:1 Device Program.

BUT with us, your child’s Microsoft Surface Pro device:

  • Has ALL the required software already pre-installed, including the Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Suite programs, and any other subject specific applications – no hours of installations or scrolling through user manuals.
  • Can have any additional software deployed remotely by our Information Technology Staff when required.
  • Comes with a full and friendly on-campus IT HelpDesk Support Team.
  • Is replaced with the latest device model every three years – starting in Year 4, then upgraded in Years 7 and 10.
  • Enjoys a 3-year warranty with ‘hot swap’, whereby students have access to a similar device during any repairs – so no ‘learning downtime’ in any classes.
  • Features a generous ‘three strikes’ insurance policy.
  • Offers the ultimate continuity and uniformity of all teaching and learning processes in each class – with every child having equal digital capacity on the same device, and no student being disadvantaged by a slower home laptop with less functionality and/or missing software and hardware.
  • Includes a keyboard, stylus, carry bag and screen protector/safety case.

The value of these many extras is not often considered when comparing our 1:1 Device Program with a straight computer-only ‘off-the-shelf’ sale from a commercial retailer.

Furthermore, Canterbury College holds mass buying power with the large number of laptops we require, so we can negotiate excellent bulk purchase deals.

Canterbury College: Official Microsoft Showcase & Lighthouse School

Did you know only a handful of schools in Australia achieve the status of being a Microsoft Showcase School?

To be recognised, you must graduate up through the levels – starting as a Microsoft Lighthouse School, through to being a Microsoft Gold School, and finally reaching the peak with Microsoft Showcase School status.

The Microsoft Showcase School Program is an educational transformation program connected with an international community of like-minded innovative schools worldwide.

This program facilitates immersive experiences to encourage lifelong learning and streamlines the evolution of fundamental future-ready skills, allowing students to accomplish more in less time.

Canterbury has been a 1:1 Student – Microsoft Surface Pro Laptop Device School from Years 3/4 upwards since 2019, with our students receiving a new device every three years – typically in Years 4, 7 and 10.

This means our students are always working on a device capable of the demands of evolving digital learning opportunities.

There has been tremendous uptake and support by families and staff as our students use their laptops to ‘power’ their futures.

Our students use their devices to research and record information, predominantly using the latest Microsoft Office software package, partnered with rapid school-based data delivery.

Even in non-1:1 device years, most classes leverage the ‘instant and permanent’ OneNote to teach and warehouse lessons.

In conjunction with our Canterbury Community portal MyCC, this takes teaching and learning to levels not imagined by generations past.

Many schools right across the world using Microsoft products aspire to become Microsoft Lighthouse Schools.

Schools must really use the technology and show genuine commitment to value-adding as an experience and an education to achieve this status.

Once becoming a Lighthouse or Showcase School, that school has access to worldwide networks for sharing insights and best-practices using the Microsoft Education Transformation Framework.

Each school is also allocated specific advisors and support from Microsoft to enable even more digital transformation, backed by exclusive access to offers and next-generation products.

Canterbury can take pride in knowing that Microsoft has acknowledged our dedication to exemplifying vision, innovation, and academic transformation, allowing students to prepare for their future beyond our campus – and truly be World Ready.

Mr James Jenkins, our Head of AI and Digital Transformation, is the staff member driving this initiative and deserves a massive thank you for his wonderful efforts in this area over many years.

Becoming a Microsoft Showcase School isn’t a destination, but rather the beginning of another exciting journey. There will be new skills to learn and new tools to embrace as we turn our ambitions in the digital learning space into reality… – Mr James Jenkins
