Rugby Ready. World Ready. Canterbury College Rugby Scholarships Now Open

Canterbury College is inviting talented young rugby players to apply for 2026 Rugby Scholarships, offering an exceptional opportunity for student-athletes entering Years 9-11 to pursue both sporting and academic excellence.

Jack Henry: A Canterbury Rugby Success Story

Recent graduate Jack Henry (Class of 2023) exemplifies the type of student-athlete who thrives in Canterbury’s rugby program, continuing to achieve impressive milestones since leaving the College last year. Jack has:

  • Received the 2024 UQ Elite Athlete Scholarship, enabling him to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Physiology
  • Represented the 2024 and 2025 UQ Men’s 7s elite Stannard Cup team
  • Served as 2024-2025 Colts 1 Captain (under 20s)
  • Been selected for the 2024 Australian Uniroos team, travelling to France to compete in the Uni Games 7s

When asked about his time at Canterbury, Jack’s responses reveal the depth of impact the College had on his development.

“The Coaches’ experience developed me not only physically but mentally, on and off the field, as a rugby player and as a young man,” Jack reflected.

He also highlighted the unique environment Canterbury provided: “Playing in grade 10 gave me the opportunity as a younger player to be mentored and experience high-quality training earlier than most.”

The lessons Jack learned at Canterbury have stayed with him beyond the rugby field. “Being part of the team and being a player that is determined to be the ‘1 percenter’ is what separates you from the rest, whether that’s in training or in life,” he said. “Understanding the influence you have on those younger generations below you and you being a good role model has a huge effect on their mentality.”

Principal Dan Walker said the scholarships represent Canterbury’s commitment to creating pathways for aspiring athletes who value education just as highly as their sport.

“Our rugby program prepares students to be competitive at the highest levels while remaining grounded, respectful, and academically focused,” Mr Walker said. “We want to attract students who show both potential and the right attitude – those who will thrive in a community that values hard work and humility.”

The Rugby Scholarships form part of Canterbury’s expanding Sport Excellence Program, which supports students with access to experienced coaching, strength and conditioning facilities, and mentoring from past players and professional partners.

Head of Sport, Mrs Catherine Krzensk, said Canterbury provides the ideal balance for families seeking structure, opportunity, and care.

“We are a school that takes sport seriously but never loses sight of the bigger picture – developing good people as well as good players,” Mrs Krzensk said.

Advice for Future Rugby Scholars

For younger players considering applying for a Canterbury Rugby Scholarship, Jack’s advice is clear: “It’s a great opportunity to establish development on the field as a rugby player but also as a young man, so taking all opportunities with both hands and if any opportunities arise as a big or small challenge, back yourself to adapt and shine on or off the field because that’s when you grow the most.”
