Passport to Learning: Why We Value Global Experiences
In today’s interconnected world, being “World Ready” takes on yet another dimension for Canterbury College. At our school, this isn’t just a catchy phrase, as our staff, students and parents know. It is a commitment to giving our students the experiences they need to thrive as confident and optimistic global citizens.
One of the most powerful ways we achieve this is through our robust program of international study tours, cultural immersions, and overseas trips. These have grown in recent years and demand for these programs is very strong.
These tours are far more than just holidays; they are intensive, hands-on learning environments that accelerate personal growth and academic understanding.
The Benefits of Stepping Outside the Classroom
What exactly do students gain from these adventures?
- Real-World Language & Cultural Fluency: There is no substitute for using a language where it is spoken. Our French language tour to Switzerland earlier this year and the hugely successful Japanese language tour to Japan in 2023 immerse students in the local culture, transforming textbook knowledge into genuine communication skills. With Spain planned for 2026 and China for 2027, our language students have a remarkable pipeline of opportunities.
- Building Resilience and Confidence: Navigating a foreign city, managing unexpected changes, and interacting with people from different backgrounds inherently builds resilience and confidence. Students learn to step outside their comfort zone, solve problems, and become more self-reliant—life skills that are invaluable long after they return home. For our sporting students, such as Netballers who travelled to New Zealand in 2024, this gave them opposition who were challenging and imposing.
- Deepening Academic Knowledge: Subject-specific tours bring learning to life. Whether it’s attending a world-class academic program, like the Oxford University study tour to the UK that Mrs. Adamson is calling Expressions of Interest (EOI) for, or participating in music and sports tours and festivals in between, these experiences provide context that regular lessons simply cannot replicate.
- Developing Global Citizenship: By directly experiencing different ways of life, students cultivate empathy, broaden their perspectives, and understand their place in the world. They learn to appreciate diversity and tackle global challenges with an open, informed mind.
Expanding Our Horizons with Round Square
We are thrilled to announce that we are about to enter candidacy application for Round Square, which will further supercharge our offerings. This global network of schools is founded on IDEALS (Internationalism, Democracy, Environmentalism, Adventure, Leadership, and Service) and will open up exciting new avenues for our students, including service projects, adventure challenges, and leadership conferences all over the world.
From our language and academic immersions to our sports, music, and new Round Square adventures, it is increasingly the case at Canterbury College that World Ready Starts Here
Looking Ahead: Term 4 Brings Reflection and Planning
As we enter Term 4, it’s hard to believe the school year is already drawing to a close. This final term is a special time—not just for wrapping up learning, but for reflecting on the journey we’ve taken and preparing for the road ahead. As teachers, we always enjoy Term 4 for these reasons.
2025 year has been a very successful one for learning. Our Year 3 and 5 NAPLAN results have shown great improvement from previous years and our representatives in external competitions have performed so well! Throughout Term 4, teachers and staff take stock of the year that’s been. We look at what worked well, what could be improved, and how our students have grown – academically, socially, and emotionally. It’s a chance to celebrate achievements, big and small, and to acknowledge the effort and resilience shown by our students across the year.
Canterbury College offers so many opportunities in the four dimensions for our students, but these opportunities don’t just happen – It takes lots of planning! Behind the scenes, planning for the next school year is already well underway. Teachers are preparing curriculum programs, reviewing resources, and setting goals for 2026. Leadership teams look at staffing, timetables, and school-wide initiatives. We also start thinking about transitions—whether it’s our youngest learners moving into Prep, or our Year 6 students preparing for senior school.
Term 4 is also a time for community connection. End-of-year events and celebrations bring us together to honour the year’s journey and look forward with excitement.
We encourage families to stay engaged during this busy term. Your support makes a real difference. Whether it’s attending an event, chatting with your child about their learning, or simply celebrating their efforts, your presence helps build a strong and supportive school community.
Here’s to a positive and productive Term 4 and to laying the foundations for a fantastic year ahead!
Celebrating the 2026 Student Leadership Investiture Assembly
This week our College gathered for the 2026 Student Leadership Investiture Ceremony, a significant milestone in the Canterbury journey of our Year 11 students as they were officially inducted as the Year 12 leaders of our College. This year’s ceremony also included the presentation of Senior Ties and Badges, a symbolic gift marking their commitment as the most senior cohort of our community.
The Investiture Assembly is more than a ceremony – it is a rite of passage that entrusts our new Year 12 students with the responsibility of leading by example. Each student has been called to uphold Canterbury’s vision of nurturing confident, optimistic, and compassionate young people who are World-Ready. Together, they are charged with setting the standard for others to follow, living out our core values of integrity, respect, gratitude, and effort, and leaving behind a legacy of leadership that will inspire generations to come.
As part of the ceremony, our 2025 School Captains, Amelia Ryan and Ben Stanley, shared thoughtful reflections on their leadership journey. Amelia remarked, “It is an absolute honour and privilege to represent your peers. Our student leadership team is proud of the legacy we have created through our theme, ‘Be The Voice.’ Few schools empower students to speak up, lead initiatives, and create meaningful change. At Canterbury, leadership and growth opportunities are endless.”
Our newly inducted 2026 School Captains, Cooper McIntyre and Ashutosh Vaitha, then unveiled the student leadership theme for the coming year: Together We Thrive. This theme embodies unity, collaboration, and collective growth – a vision for every student to prosper and flourish as part of a strong and supportive Canterbury community.
We congratulate all our new leaders and look forward to witnessing their impact as they guide Canterbury in the year ahead.
Term 4 is an exciting time and reflective time for our cocurricular programs. As we celebrate the achievements of 2025, we also begin preparations for the 2026 sporting year. Our showcase event is the Cocurricular Awards Evening on Wednesday 22nd October. This is a wonderful event to celebrate our students’ achievements across Sport, Thought Sports and Performing Arts. It is a wonderful opportunity to acknowledge the dedication and talent of our students.
Term 4 also highlights our final inter-house competition for the year, with the Junior and Senior School Swimming carnivals in Week 1 and 2. Following these carnivals, our preparation for the TAS and JTAS Swimming carnivals will commence.
The Junior TAS competitions continue this term with Tennis, Touch Football and AFL, whilst Senior School students earn the opportunity to compete at All Schools Touch, CBSQ Basketball, Schools Cup Volleyball.
2026- TAS Pre-Season
Our 2026 preparations commence this term for our Trimester 1 sports: Senior School Basketball, Football (soccer) and Tennis, while the boys’ teams are focusing on Cricket and Volleyball. We look forward to having our current Year 6 students, and our new students for 2026 join us in these programs.

Welcome to Term 4!
I am delighted to introduce myself as the new Director of Administration at Canterbury College. It is a privilege to join such a dynamic and dedicated school community, and I am truly excited about the term ahead.
In this role, my primary focus is to ensure that our school’s administrative operations run smoothly, efficiently, and in alignment with our broader educational goals. I will be working closely with the leadership team, faculty, staff, and students to support both day-to-day logistics and long-term planning.
Some of my key responsibilities include:
- Overseeing daily administrative operations to maintain a well-organized and responsive school environment
- Supporting staff and faculty in administrative processes and cross-departmental coordination
- Managing scheduling, logistics, and use of facilities for school events and meetings
- Ensuring compliance with school policies, procedures, and safety protocols
- Contributing to strategic planning and the implementation of school-wide initiatives
- Serving as a liaison between students, staff, and administration to promote clear communication and a positive school climate
Throughout my career, I’ve seen how strong administrative systems can empower educators, enhance the student experience, and foster a culture of trust and collaboration. My goal is to ensure that the systems and structures in place truly serve the people who make up this incredible school community.
I look forward to getting to know many of you in the coming weeks and welcome any questions, ideas, or conversations. Please feel free to reach out or stop by – my door is always open.
The Story Behind the Window
In our chapel there is a beautiful stain glass window that honours the life and ministry of St Francis of Assisi, one of the most beloved saints in Christian history. Known for his deep compassion, humility, and love for all of God’s creation, St Francis continues to inspire people of all ages to live with kindness, simplicity, and peace.
Born in Italy in 1181, Francis grew up in a wealthy family but chose a life of poverty and service after a powerful spiritual awakening. He gave up his riches to follow Jesus more closely, dedicating his life to helping the poor, caring for the sick, and preaching peace. His message was simple but profound: live humbly, love deeply, and care for all living things.
St Francis is especially remembered for his connection to nature. He saw animals, plants, and the earth itself as his brothers and sisters, and he believed that all creation reflects the beauty of God. That’s why he’s known as the patron saint of animals and the environment.
At Canterbury, we can follow St Francis’ example by:
- Being kind to others, especially those in need.
- Taking care of our environment—recycling, reducing waste, and respecting nature.
- Practicing gratitude and simplicity in our daily lives
This Sunday 12th October, we will be holding a special Pet Blessing Service in our beautiful bush chapel. Everyone is warmly invited to bring along their pets—no matter the species—as we give thanks to God for the joy and companionship they bring to our lives. We’ll also take time to remember and honour our beloved pets who are no longer with us.
As the service will be held outdoors to allow plenty of space for our furry, feathered, and scaly friends, please bring a hat and a chair for your comfort.

As we reflect on his life, let’s remember that even small acts of kindness and care can make a big difference. St Francis reminds us that peace begins with each of us—and that love, when shared freely, can transform the world.
“Start by doing what’s necessary; then do what’s possible; and suddenly you are doing the impossible.” – St Francis of Assisi
