Introducing Canterbury's New Deputy Principal Starting 2023: Meagan King

To the Canterbury Community,

I have great pleasure in announcing and introducing Meagan King as the new Deputy Principal of Canterbury College.

She will commence in January 2023.

Meagan joins Canterbury from the Methodist Ladies College over in Perth, where she has held the executive leadership position of Director of Innovation, since January 2020.

Meagan is, however, a Queenslander at heart, having held senior leadership positions - including Director of Teaching, Learning and Academic Performance at A.B. Paterson College on the Gold Coast between 2013 and 2019.

Her career, spanning coeducational and single-sex schools - in both the public and independent sector, including The Hale School in Western Australia, and Moreton Bay Boys’ College in Brisbane, has been characterised by a consistent and unrelenting focus on improving academic standards and building capacity in her teaching teams.

Through the application process, Meagan impressed the selection panel with her clear and well-defined views and experience, regarding quality teaching and learning, staff development and curriculum innovation portfolios.

Significantly, Meagan is the creator and convenor of the national Innovation In Education Festival, a role that has positioned her as one of the leading educational thinkers in the country.

Meagan holds a Bachelor of Education from the University of Sydney and a Master of Education (Gifted Education) from the University of New England.

She has vast teaching experience from ELC to Year 12, including in the area of Mathematics, which she will teach at Canterbury.

As we implement our new teaching and learning framework - The Canterbury Way, Meagan will add significant value and wisdom.

This will ensure the quality of differentiated and personalised classroom teaching from Prep to Year 12, continues to improve over time.

Meagan will relocate to Queensland with her husband Des and two sons - Nathan and Lucas, in time to commence in the new year.

I have no doubt that in the years ahead, Meagan will lead our academic, co-curricular and staff development programs of the College with great imagination and skill.

I also take this opportunity to thank our Head of Secondary School, Mrs Rebecca Adamson, for her time acting as Deputy Principal in Term 4 this year.

Yours sincerely,

Mr Dan Walker
Principal

National Music Success: 47th John Curro National Youth Concerto Competition - Haydn Li

National Music Success: 47th John Curro National Youth Concerto Competition - Haydn Li

Our Year 9 student Haydn Li has been selected as a Recitalist in the 47th John Curro National Youth Concerto Competition (NYCC).

The NYCC is recognised as the most prestigious competition in Australia for string soloists aged up to 18 years.

It was established by the Queensland Youth Orchestras in 1976 to encourage the development of young Australian string players.

Former winners of the competition include Ray Chen, Richard Tognetti, Emily Sun, Zoe Black and many other professional musicians, who have forged successful national and international careers.

3 Finalists and 4 Recitalists were chosen nationally through a rigorous audition process.

This year, Haydn is one of only two players chosen from Queensland, with all the remaining competitors from New South Wales.

As part of NYCC week (1 - 9 October), Haydn is currently giving an intensive series of recitals, at various venues including: Brisbane Boys College, Brisbane Grammar School, Mansfield State High School, the 4MBS Performance Studio, John Paul College and Somerville House.

This will culminate in a performance at the Old Museum Building THIS Sunday 9 October at 3pm, where Haydn will be joining the Queensland Youth Symphony in the String Sensations concert.

THIS Friday 7 October, Haydn will be giving a recital at John Paul College at 9:30am. #NYCC

Today's Year 8 BEE Logan Big Ideas Challenge @ Yarrabilba State College

Today's Year 8 BEE Logan Big Ideas Challenge @ Yarrabilba State College

Our Year 8 Business Enterprise & Entrepreneurship (BEE) students attended today's 2022 Logan Big Ideas Challenge hosted by Future Anything at the Yarrabilba State College.

The Big Ideas Challenge is a fast-paced and hands-on day of listening, learning and doing.

It culminates in teams of students pitching their own innovative solutions for a complex local issue.

Today's theme was: Technology X.

Our students worked with other schools on hands-on ideation sessions and heard from local entrepreneurs.

They worked through processes to explore and solve problems, and design solutions for an innovative idea using technology - to make the world a better place!

The skills that our students learned today, tie in with their assessment for the upcoming Pop-Up Market Stalls happening later this term.

Today's Agenda

  • Welcome (Intro, Day Overview, Future of Work).
  • Local Entrepreneurs Panel.
  • Picking a problem and group forming.
  • The Entrepreneur’s Odyssey (Steps 1-6).
  • The Entrepreneur’s Odyssey (Steps 7-10).
  • The ‘Shark Tank’ Idea/Product Pitches.
  • Winner’s Announcement + Closing Final Reflections.

2022 Australian Youth Volleyball Championships @ Bendigo: Canterbury Students Competition Results

2022 Australian Youth Volleyball Championships @ Bendigo: Canterbury Students Competition Results

Canterbury College had five students travel down to Bendigo over the September holidays, representing Queensland at the 2022 Australian Youth Volleyball Championships (AYVC).

This competition is an elite Australia-wide volleyball tournament, including age groups from U14 to U18.

This year, teams travelled from all over the ACT, NSW, QLD, VIC, WA, SA and TAS to compete.

Our very own Lucas Ioapo (Year 8), Jodeci Faraimo-Saolele (Year 10), Marli Cetinich (Year 11), Jeremy Kriletich (Year 11) and Jalen Harrison (Year 12) were all selected to represent QLD.

Flying down to Bendigo for the competition from 25-29 September, our very own Taipans Volleyballers wore their QLD jerseys with pride, coming away with some formidable results.

Congratulations to Lucas, Marli, Jodeci, Jeremy and Jalen!

Lucas: U14 White - 2nd place.

Marli: U17 White - 6th place.

Jodeci: U17 Maroon - 1st place.

Jeremy: U18 Maroon - 2nd place.

Jalen: U18 White - 6th place.

Alongside these achievements at the AYVC, Jalen, Jeremy and Marli were invited by Volleyball Australia to extend their stay in Bendigo.

For an extra three days, they continued training alongside 50 of Australia’s best Volleyballers under some of Australia’s greatest coaches.

What an awesome experience and a testament to the hard work these athletes put in - both on and off the court.

Jeremy Kriletich has also been invited to attend an Australian Volleyball Academy (AVA) Camp this coming weekend.

The AVA headquarters is located within the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) in Canberra, and their primary objective is to identify and develop Olympic potential athletes for both Indoor and Beach Volleyball.

Jeremy flies down to Canberra this weekend, and has a second weekend camp in November with the AVA.

So all the best to Jeremy at these camps. Watch this space!
