United Nations Day: Thursday 26 August 2021 – Canterbury ‘Around The World’ Video

United Nations Day: Thursday 26 August 2021 – Canterbury ‘Around The World’ Video

It’s estimated we have around 80-90 cultures and between 50-60 languages proudly represented right here at Canterbury College!

Now COVID restrictions have forced the cancellation of our major campus-wide multicultural event on Thursday 26 August – which is very disappointing!

BUT… instead of accepting total defeat, we still want to celebrate United Nations Day digitally, by assembling a student-made video montage, showcasing as many different Canterbury cultures as possible.

The idea is simple AND easy…

We are asking our students just to video some of their home life culture for us on their smartphones…

That’s it!

Maybe you or your parents prepare some special international dishes, or you have a recipe passed down through the generations that leads back to another homeland…

Maybe you or your parents have some traditional clothing from another country or culture that you can wear and show us…

Is there some artwork or interesting objects around your house from a foreign country with special significance to your family?

You might even have some family customs or prayers or habits or superstitions you would like to share...

How about some of your foreign language or singing? But with an English translation afterwards please.

Get your family involved in the filming and have some fun – there are no hard or fast rules.

Just please explain what we are seeing in your video – what culture it’s from and the background behind it.

If you can add traditional music from your culture in the background even better.

All we need is about 1-2 minutes of smartphone video.

The best videos will be compiled together to make our Canterbury ‘Around The World’ Video that will be shared across our College comms channels on United Nations Day: Thursday 26 August 2021.

Please email your videos by Midday Monday 23 August 2021 to

Thank you!

Scholastic Junior School Book Club Contactless Payments

Scholastic Junior School Book Club Contactless Payments

Scholastic Book Club is an exciting part of Junior School life, and we thank our students and their parents for their enthusiastic support.

Starting in Term 4 (Catalogue 7) we are moving to contactless payments, so orders will have to be made online from this point forward.

However, the books and any other products or stationery, will be delivered to the school and distributed as per normal to the students in their classrooms.

Kind regards,

POSTPONED: Canterbury ELC-Year 2 Athletics Carnival

POSTPONED: Canterbury ELC-Year 2 Athletics Carnival

Dear Parents & Carers,

Please be advised that we have made the decision to postpone our ELC-Year 2 Athletics Carnival to a date later in the term.

The carnival was originally scheduled to be held THIS Friday 13 August 2021.

This decision was made due to the current restrictions in place for our school community.

In previous years, this event has been attended by a large population of the Canterbury community.

But with the current restriction that no spectators are allowed on campus, I believe the carnival would not be a booming success.

I am currently working on a new date, and once this is confirmed, I will send further information to update you on this.

Stay safe and please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any further questions.

Yours faithfully,

Mr Ben Maxfield
Director Of Sport & Activities Years K-6
Canterbury College

Virtual Cattle Farm Lockdown Excursion 🐂🚜🌾

Virtual Cattle Farm Lockdown Excursion 🐂🚜🌾

Hi Guys,

Just for a break from COVID news and lockdown updates, I have some different news for you if you’d like to use it...

I wish the photos were clearer, but they are screenshots that my students took from their devices.

In Lesson 3 on Wednesday, I took my Year 9 Agricultural Science class on a ‘Virtual Lockdown Excursion’ of my farm, which is actually a working cattle property. 🐂

This would not have happened if we were not currently in lockdown – so it was a great opportunity for the whole class.

They really enjoyed the 'online outdoors' experience and asked lots of questions.

They were able to see the breeding herd and calves, the types of feed used on the property, our machinery and the cattle yards, and our operating procedures – a full virtual tour. 🚜🌾

Attached are a few photos you may like to use on social media.

When life gives you lemons, make lemonade! 🍋

Kind regards,
Shannon Williamson

Talking Taipans Tennis 🎾…

Talking Taipans Tennis 🎾…

Lots of good things (were) happening at the Canterbury Taipans Tennis Club (pre-lockdown) with our tennis athletes enjoying success at both local and national tournaments.

Head Tennis Coach James Rapkins gives us the lowdown...

8-year-old Lucy Brisbane came second at the Tennis Logan City (TLC) Junior Premier League Tournament in the Orange Ball U9 Category after being defeated by fellow Taipan Austin Musk.

Our Taipans came away with plenty of valuable match practice, as 50 of our tennis athletes compete in the TLC Leagues each week.

At the national level, High Performance Squad member Tayla Hunter-Geppert achieved a personal best result at the recent Rod Laver Lead-In Tournament, placing second in the Brisbane International Girls Universal Tennis Ranking (UTR) match-play event.

Being in the Taipans Tennis Club has also provided our high performance athletes the opportunity to compete at the Collegiate level over in the United States.

One of our players has been offered a full-ride athletic scholarship, while another has just completed his studies and enjoyed an excellent Collegiate career.

Currently, we are preparing our Taipans Tennis Squad members for an 8-day tournament trip (COVID-willing) to Rockhampton and Bundaberg during the September Holidays to play in national tournaments.

This trip will provide our players with an excellent opportunity to gain a lot of competitive experience.

We also run weekly fitness-based Adult Cardio Tennis sessions (when not in lockdown).

Look out for the next player information night for any local players looking to go big in tennis (post lockdown of course!).

2021 QLD O’Donnell Youth Lecture With Dr Nathan Boase – Plastic Fantastic! Or Not?

2021 QLD O’Donnell Youth Lecture With Dr Nathan Boase – Plastic Fantastic! Or Not?

Tuesday 3 August 2021 Update:

Dear All,

For the second year now, COVID has forced the cancellation of this guest lecture.

There may be a small chance of hosting it during the start of Term 4, but a number of things need to go our way for that to occur.

Our chemistry classes are being informed this week.

Stay safe everybody!

Every year, the Royal Australian Chemical Institute (RACI) provides access to leading chemical scientists via their Secondary School Chemistry Youth Lecture Series.

These lectures cover a diverse range of engaging topics with the aim of inspiring students into a future career in Chemistry.

So we are excited to host Dr Nathan Boase to speak with us on a lecture entitled: Plastic Fantastic! Or Not So Fantastic?

Plastics are everywhere in the news and on social media at the moment, with global society trying to wage the 'War On Waste’.

But what exactly are plastics?

What are they made up of?

Why were they so popular in the late 20th century?

This lecture will focus on the molecules that make up plastics - called polymers, and will use demonstrations and examples to answer key questions:

- How does the chemical structure of polymers create the unique properties that have been favoured for so long?

- Why can polymers create problems for waste management?

- What else can polymers be used for other than straws and sandwich wrappers?

We will also look to the future of polymers and plastics and the role they will play far into the 21st century.

More information on the National Youth Lecture Series can be found by clicking on this weblink here.

WHAT: 2021 QLD O’Donnell Youth Lecture With Dr Nathan Boase – Plastic Fantastic! Or Not So Fantastic?

WHEN: 1:30pm – 2:15pm Thursday 5 August 2021
