Year 9 Semester One Mandarin Excursion | Sunnybank Plaza
https://youtu.be/rVBtMKURk84
During Semester One this year, our Year 9 Mandarin students have been learning about Chinese food culture and dining etiquette, alongside studying the language itself.
At the end of Term Two, students enjoyed a day excursion to Sunnybank Plaza, which is renowned for its vibrant Chinese community, featuring numerous Chinese grocery stores, shops and restaurants.
Students dined at a Yum Cha restaurant where each student completed a Speaking Challenge, which included ordering food and asking for additional utensils in Mandarin.
This setting enabled students to practise their Mandarin language skills in real-life situations.
After Yum Cha, students participated in a Scavenger Hunt, searching for given Chinese characters and words around the centre.
Students were also guided through the shopping centre, exploring some Chinese shops and restaurants that are popular among the locals.
This excursion provided students a great opportunity to immerse themselves in an authentic environment and apply their classroom knowledge in a practical setting.

Best Wishes,
The ASE Group: The Australian School of Entrepreneurship
Our Year 10 student Ashutosh Vaitha has just been named one of three finalists in the Australia-wide Westpac Youth Impact Challenge’s Secondary Age Category.
Our Year 10 Start-Up class did a workshop with The ASE Group: Australian School of Entrepreneurship earlier this year, when students entered their businesses into this competition.
Ashutosh entered his Ashan Industries business, and The ASE Group emailed this week to say that after two days deliberating, the judges have shortlisted him as one of the Top 3 finalists from around the country.
As the CEO of his own start-up company – Ashan Industries, he is developing a simple to use and visually-based Neurodiverse Children’s App, to help communicate with people like his younger brother Vishan who has autism.
So CONGRATULATIONS Ashutosh as we await the eventual national winner to be judged and announced at the end of the week – GOOD LUCK!
You might remember Ashutosh was awarded Runner-Up in the 2023 Future Anything Grand Final, earning him a place in the YouthX Program, which includes a number of funding and mentoring packages valued at around $10,000.
Last year this Becket Community Leader also collected 1,332 cup noodle donations for the local Rosie’s: Friends On The Street organisation, to help the homeless and disadvantaged people living around Logan.

Years 9 & 12 Drama: Children's Theatre Workshop | Zen Zen Zo Physical Theatre Group Visit
Years 9 & 12 Drama: Children's Theatre Workshop | Zen Zen Zo Physical Theatre Group Visit
Our Year 9 Drama students recently worked on their Children's Theatre performances, which they presented to Canterbury’s own ELC classes as part of their Creative Industries Faculty studies.
The Zen Zen Zo Physical Theatre Group, who also worked with our Year 12 Drama students, were on campus running two workshops during class time to enhance our students’ physical on-stage performance abilities.
This assisted our young actors in giving more engaging performances for their ELC audiences in June as part of their curriculum assessment.

What is SPARK?
SPARK is an elective-based 'hands-on' curriculum for Years 5 and 6 students unique to Canterbury.
Each semester, our students choose a particular subject to study.
Then, students from both year levels are combined into the same classroom and taught by relevant staff.
SPARK is about building curiosity, encouraging students to try something new, and providing an exceptional opportunity to embark on their learning journey as part of their 'World Ready' Canterbury education.
When does SPARK occur?
SPARK happens once weekly, with students encouraged to continue learning beyond the classroom.
How does SPARK link to the curriculum?
SPARK focuses on the Australian Curriculum's general capabilities, critical and creative thinking, personal and social capability, ethical understanding and intercultural understanding.
How can I see my child's learning?
The Junior School hosts a learning exhibition at the end of each semester, where all students will have something to exhibit based on their SPARK sessions.
