2024 Year 12 Canterbury Prefects Handover Lunch

Yesterday, our 2024 Year 12 Canterbury Prefects and the newly appointed 2025 Prefects team came together for a lively Handover Lunch, enjoying a feast of tacos and plenty of engaging conversations.

Students exchanged valuable insights, fresh ideas, and a few tried-and-true leadership tips to help the 2025 Prefects hit the ground running.

As we celebrate this exciting transition, we extend a heartfelt thank you to the 2024 Prefects for their dedication and passion, wishing them the best of luck during their final term at Canterbury.

2024 Gold Coast Titans All Schools Touch Football Tournament | Event Wrap

2024 Gold Coast Titans All Schools Touch Football Tournament | Event Wrap

Last Wednesday 2 October to Sunday 6 October, our Senior School Touch Football Girls Teams proudly competed in the Gold Coast Titans All Schools Touch Football Competition held at the Gold Coast Performance Centre in Runaway Bay.

This five-day event featured over 580 school teams from around the globe, making it the largest touch football tournament in the world.

Both the Canterbury 15 Years and 18 Years Girls Teams showcased their talents, teamwork, fitness and determination, representing the College with pride throughout the competition.

15 Years Girls Team

Under the guidance of Coach Miss Georgia Grimsey, our 15 Years Girls put on an impressive display, finishing third in their pool group.

This achievement is even more remarkable given that it was their first time playing together, having only managed a few team training sessions before the tournament.

Despite this, their sheer grit and team growth in every match was undeniable.

Our players also demonstrated their strong individual skills while working cohesively as a team, laying a strong foundation for future success.

18 Years Girls Team

Led by Coach Mr Karl Skinner, our 18 Years Girls performed at an exceptional level, securing second place in their pool group.

Unfortunately, they narrowly missed out on advancing to the final 16 due to their lower points differential only, which highlights just how tightly contested the competition was.

Despite the near miss, their passion and commitment shone through, with every game highlighting their resilience, skills and teamwork.

Both teams represented Canterbury College with immense pride and dedication, leaving their mark amongst 580 fellow teams.

The leadership and support provided by our coaching staff played a pivotal role in the teams' success.

We are excited about the future of Canterbury’s Touch Football Program, and anticipate the continued growth and achievements of our young athletes in the years to come.

Mrs Georgia Skinner

Touch Football Coordinator

Prep Science Incursion | Professor Jellybean: Topic ‘Colour Your World’

Prep Science Incursion | Professor Jellybean: Topic ‘Colour Your World’

Today, all our Prep student classes enjoyed an exciting Science incursion with regular visiting educator Professor Jellybean.

This term, the preppies are exploring the scientific topic ‘Colour Your World’, so Professor Jellybean guided them through a hands-on investigation to uncover the colourful world around us.

The students learned about the flow of light energy and discovered how sunlight powers life on Earth.

One highlight was mixing a seaweed solution with calcium water to create colourful ‘worms’, demonstrating a fascinating chemical reaction.

The students were thrilled to watch the natural changes happen right before their eyes.

Our young preppies also studied how changes in nature can occur, as they prepared seed bombs that they will later plant.

These will bloom into vibrant, insect-attracting flowers, connecting them to the natural world.

Through these engaging activities, Professor Jellybean integrated key elements of the Australian Curriculum, making science both fun and interactive for our young learners.

Incoming Year 7s For 2025 Orientation Day: Parents & Carers Workshop & Tour

Incoming Year 7s For 2025 Orientation Day: Parents & Carers Workshop & Tour

On Tuesday morning, we hosted our incoming Year 7s for 2025 Orientation Day, where happy parents and carers engaged in a special workshop facilitated by Dr Arne Rubinstein from The Rites of Passage Institute.

This session allowed parents and carers to explore valuable issues while their children actively participated in designated campus ‘familiarisation’ activities around the grounds.

Dr Arne Rubinstein shared informative insights into creating healthy rites of passage for teenagers, emphasising the importance of:

Belonging: Fostering a sense of community and inclusion.

Safety: Ensuring physical and mental well-being and encouraging a safe environment for making mistakes and learning from them.

Identity: Recognising and celebrating each student's unique qualities, strengths and interests.

Skills: Developing resilience, emotional intelligence, a sense of vision and purpose, and a growth mindset.

Throughout the workshop, parents and carers reflected on their own teenage experiences and discussed the kind of relationships they aspire to build with their own children now.

It was a meaningful opportunity for them to gain deeper insights into understanding teenagers.

We extend our sincere thanks to all parents and carers who joined us, and special gratitude goes to Dr Arne Rubinstein for his time and insightful presentation to our 2025 Year 7 Canterbury cohort.

Senior School Leadership Investiture Ceremony: For Our Incoming 2025 Student Leaders

On Tuesday afternoon, one of our highlight events – the annual Senior School Leadership Investiture Ceremony, was hosted in the CEC before a large audience of Years 5-12 students and staff, our Senior School and Executive Leadership senior management teams, invited VIP guests, and the proud parents and families of our student leaders.

This ceremony celebrates the official appointments of our School Captains, Prefects, House Vice Captains, and Activity Leaders for the upcoming 2025 school year, symbolised with handovers from the ‘old guard’ of 2024 student leaders.

So a huge congratulations to our incoming 2025 Senior School Student Leadership Team, and our best wishes for the next 12 months with the full support of the College staff.

It was wonderful having so many clearly proud parents, carers and families of our student leaders attending the investiture ceremony, before joining us over a pleasant afternoon tea outside the CEC.

Lastly, a special thank you to our outgoing 2024 Student Leaders who have demonstrated our College Values of integrity, respect, gratitude and effort so superbly with our entire school community.

The event fostered a real sense of teamwork and connection among participants with cheering from the grandstands – especially during the House-based swimming relay race.

As part of a new tradition, the Year 12 cohort made a splash by all jumping into the pool together, marking a memorable moment in their final year at Canterbury.

Congratulations to all the Age Champions, King and Queen Of The Pool - Riley Edwards & Taylah Smith-Miller, and a special ‘shout-out’ to Ramsey House as the 2024 Senior School Interhouse Swimming Carnival Champions!
