Week 1, Term 1, 2026 | Friday 30 January
Beginning 2026 With Purpose, Pride, and High Expectations
It has been a wonderful start to the 2026 school year, with a calm, settled and positive atmosphere across the campus. Students have returned energised and ready to learn, and it has been a pleasure seeing families reconnect, new friendships forming and classrooms already establishing strong routines.
This year we welcome 1690 students to Canterbury. Our community now includes 110 children in the Early Learning Centre, 790 students in the Junior School and 890 students in the Secondary School. They are supported by 120 teachers, 60 corporate and education services staff, and more than 100 casual staff who contribute to OSHC, Taipans, Sport and Performing Arts programs. This collective effort ensures every student is known, supported and challenged.
Welcoming New Families and Staff
A very warm welcome to the nearly 100 new families joining us for the first time. We are delighted that you have chosen Canterbury and look forward to partnering with you across the year. We also welcome ten new teaching and support staff whose expertise and enthusiasm strengthen our commitment to exceptional learning and care.
Setting Up the Year Well
The beginning of the school year sets the tone for everything that follows, and our focus in these early weeks centres on four key building blocks that underpin student success, no matter their year level.
Academic Achievement
Students are encouraged to set clear and specific goals, engage deeply with their learning and take full advantage of the rich and diverse academic programs available.
High Expectations
We communicate clear expectations around presentation, effort, behaviour and character. These expectations create a culture where students understand what excellence looks like and feel supported in striving toward it.
Positive Relationships
Strong, respectful relationships between students, staff and families create the conditions for meaningful learning. These connections help shape settled classrooms, calm transitions and a sense of belonging.
Wellbeing and Balance
A thriving learner is one who is grounded and supported. Our wellbeing programs, pastoral care structures and co curricular opportunities help students build resilience, confidence and a healthy balance in school life.
Celebrating Our 2025 Academic Results
We begin this new year with enormous pride in the achievements of the Class of 2025. Their results are the strongest in Canterbury’s history.
• Median ATAR 91.3
• 54.3 percent achieved an ATAR of 90 or above
• 84 percent achieved an ATAR of 80 or above
On the basis of the available public data around the state, these outstanding outcomes position Canterbury as the top coeducational school in the Greater Brisbane area by both median ATAR and percentage of students achieving above 90.
They reflect the dedication of our students, the expertise and care of our teachers and the ongoing support of families. We congratulate the Class of 2025 on setting a new benchmark for academic excellence at Canterbury.

Senior School Sport & Activities | Term 1 Snapshot
As we step into Term 1, I’m thrilled to see the Senior School buzzing with energy across our Sport and Activities programs. This term offers students a rich selection of opportunities, from Boys’ TAS Cricket and Volleyball, Girls’ Tennis, Basketball and Football, to Swimming, Cross Country preparation, and our revitalised Strength & Conditioning sessions. Whether students are seasoned athletes or trying something new, there is a place for everyone to get involved.
Our cocurricular activities continue to thrive, with Debating, Chess, and Esports all underway. These activities play a vital role in shaping confident, well-rounded young people, and I’m always proud to see students stepping forward to grow in new ways.
One of the highlights of our community spirit this term is the increasing number of students and families volunteering at our TAS fixtures especially parents and carers assisting at the BBQ. This support plays a huge role in creating a welcoming, vibrant environment for visiting schools and provides our students with another meaningful way to give back, connect, and contribute to the broader Canterbury community. Our first home game is on Saturday 14 February. Details on how to sign up to assist will be posted on MyCC. Each sport will have a home round allocation.
At Canterbury, participation is about far more than performance. It strengthens wellbeing, builds resilience, fosters friendships, and helps students find balance in their busy school lives. Most importantly, it deepens their sense of belonging within our community.
I encourage every Senior School student to take advantage of the opportunities on offer this term – join a team, try a new activity, or challenge yourself in a different environment. The benefits extend well beyond the season or performance; they stay with our students for years to come.

Celebrating Our Year 12 Cohort’s ‘Last First Day Lunch’
This week, we proudly celebrated a significant milestone for our 2026 Year 12 cohort as they came together for their traditional Last First Day Lunch, served by their teachers. This special occasion marks not only the beginning of their final year at Canterbury College, but also the start of a year filled with leadership, responsibility, and memorable moments.
Our Year 12 students are an exceptional group of young men and women. Throughout their journey at Canterbury, they have demonstrated genuine commitment to all four dimensions of a Canterbury education and a willingness to bring the younger members of our community along for the ride. On Wednesday morning Mr Walker met with the cohort and emphasised the potential that lies within them. Success will come from continuing the daily habits and routines that have brought them to this point, whether in the classroom, on the sporting field or in the rehearsal room and from their continued support of each other and care for those around them.
As the senior leaders of our student body, we look forward with great confidence to the example they will set in 2026. Their spirit, unity, and enthusiasm were clearly on display at the lunch, reflecting the strong relationships and shared purpose that define this cohort.
We wish our Year 12s every success as they embark on their final year. We know they will lead with integrity, kindness, and pride, leaving a legacy that future students will aspire to follow.
Years 6 and 9 Student Leadership Investiture Assembly
Our 2026 Student Leadership Investiture Assembly was a proud and purposeful occasion, celebrating the induction of our Year 6 and Year 9 Student Leaders. Leadership at Canterbury is grounded in service, character and community, and is reflected in the positive influence students have on those around them.
The assembly reinforced that leadership is a skill that is learned, developed and strengthened over time. Each student was formally congratulated by Mr Walker, Mr Stansbie and Ms Roman, alongside members of our Year 12 Prefect Team. Throughout the year, our Prefects will mentor and support our Year 6 and Year 9 leaders as they strengthen their skills and grow into their responsibilities. It was fitting that all three leadership groups stood together, highlighting the strong sense of connection and continuity within our leadership program.
Leadership development is intentionally taught and modelled throughout a student’s time at Canterbury, with opportunities for all students to step forward and develop their leadership capabilities. As part of the Investiture Assembly, School Captains Cooper McIntyre and Ashutosh Vaitha presented a video address titled Talking Leadership. Featured below, the video unpacks the 2026 student theme Together We THRIVE and offers practical advice for all aspiring leaders.
Congratulations to our Year 6 and Year 9 Student Leaders, we look forward to seeing the impact they will make throughout 2026 as they serve our community with integrity.
Alumni Spotlight
In this week’s Alumni Spotlight, we catch up with Ben Stanley, one of our School Captains in 2025, who was also recognised as Dux of Canterbury College at our Scholar’s Ceremony today.
Now back on campus in a professional role, Ben represents what it means to be World Ready – applying the skills, habits, and values developed at Canterbury beyond the classroom.
Ben, what are you up to at Canterbury right now?
“Right now, I’m working in the Facilities team at Canterbury, showing me another perspective of how the college operates behind the scenes. It’s been a valuable experience that’s helped me better understand the day-to-day work that keeps the college running smoothly.”
How has it felt watching your fellow students return to school?
“Watching students return to school has felt a bit surreal. Being recently graduated, its been a mixture of nostalgia and pride as I watch the campus come alive, realising how much my role and perspective has changed.”
Can you explain how your work with canterbury connects to your bigger goals?
“Working in facilities at Canterbury, connects to my bigger goal of becoming an engineer. Being involved in the maintenance and operation of the campus, has exposed me to how things are built, maintained, and improved, helping me understand how technical work applies in real-world settings.”
Which lessons or skills from your time here are still helping you?
“One of the biggest skills still helping me is time management. My time at Canterbury taught me how to balance responsibilities, stay organised, and meet deadlines, skills I continue to rely on every day.”
How is Canterbury supporting you as you chase your next steps?
“Canterbury continues to support me by offering work opportunities and guidance that allow me to gain hands-on experience, build practical skills, and stay connected to a community that encourages me as I work toward my future career.”
Where do you hope to go next, and how is your experience here helping you get there?
“I hope to find a career in Engineering using my degree from UQ. My experiences from Canterbury have helped me become a hard-working individual who will not fold under tension but create solutions to reach my goals.”
