2024 Interschool Queensland da Vinci Academic Decathlon | Full Event Wrap & Photo Gallery - Great Results!
This week, Canterbury College sent three Senior School teams over to Saint Joseph’s Nudgee College, to compete in the 2024 Interschool Queensland da Vinci Decathlon.
I am incredibly proud to share some fantastic results that our teams achieved across the two Senior School competition days:
- Our Year 7 team placed FIRST in the English paper.
- Our Year 8/9 team placed FIRST in the Creative Producers performance.
- Our Year 11 team placed THIRD in the Engineering category.
This major academic event involved students competing in teams of eight against 52 other school teams – making a total of 1,248 students participating across the three days!
The da Vinci Decathlon is a yearly academic competition designed to challenge and stimulate the minds of school students.
Students compete in teams of eight across ten disciplines: Engineering, Mathematics and Chess, Code Breaking, Art and Poetry, Science, English, Ideation, Creative Producers, Cartography and Legacy.
Each category not only demanded a deep subject knowledge, but also the ability to think critically and solve problems collaboratively.
Our teams have been practicing past papers since the beginning of Term 2 for two afternoons per week, demonstrating a huge amount of effort and teamwork.
These results follow our group of eight Year 5s and eight Year 6s who competed on Tuesday, with Canterbury’s Year 5 team placing third in the English section.
Students looking to get involved in similar activities in the future, should please contact their relevant Lumina Coordinator – our Canterbury program which supports high-performing students.

On Tuesday, a group of eight Year 5 and eight Year 6 Canterbury students attended the Junior da Vinci Academic Decathlon at Saint Joseph’s Nudgee College, organised by our Lumina Program Coordinator Mr Jonathon Wheatley for our high-performing students.
Our Year 7s are attending today (Wednesday), while our Years 8-11 students are competing on Thursday, led by Senior School Teacher Mr Andrew Paltridge.
Canterbury’s Year 5 team placed third in the English section (please see photo attached), while the Year 6s competed valiantly – but did not secure a top three place.
This makes the event a very challenging part of the Junior School’s Lumina Program each year.
And now we wish Mr Paltridge’s Senior School teams of eight all the best for the rest of this week against the other attending schools.
Second Principal Reverend Paul Bland Catches Up With Canterbury College
Second Principal Reverend Paul Bland Catches Up With Canterbury College
Canterbury College was extremely pleased to welcome back its second ever College Principal Reverend Paul Bland (1995 - 2002) on campus, for a special lunch with current fifth Principal Mr Dan Walker (2019 - ), and some of our longest serving staff members, who were around during Reverend Bland’s tenure here.
Lunch guests included Laurie Maetam, Elaine Dobeli, Lisa Dinsdale, Nick Gillin, Glen Walker, plus current Deputy Principal Meagan King and College Chaplain Father Dan Talbot.
After lunch, Reverend Bland was taken on a campus tour – with some buildings very familiar to him, alongside quite a lot of new developments – like Care Central and our Aquatic & Tennis Centre, since he retired from Canterbury in 2002.
We certainly were honoured hosts today and Reverend Bland was clearly impressed by how much the school has grown over the years…

Years 11-12 Economics Class | RBA: Reserve Bank of Australia Online Lesson
https://youtu.be/IA8GROMNwQA
Today, our Years 11-12 Economics students enjoyed the opportunity to attend an online presentation by the Reserve Bank of Australia, on our nation’s current economic climate.
Our students gained valuable insights into crucial topics such as economic growth, GDP, unemployment and the labour market, current inflation rates, cost of living, and the Federal Government’s broad monetary policy.
This experience has undoubtedly deepened their understanding and sparked greater interest in their chosen field of economics, fresh off the 2024 Commonwealth Budget which was handed down last week.
