Chapel of The Good Shepherd | Official Mural Reveal

Chapel of The Good Shepherd | Official Mural Reveal

We are delighted to unveil and celebrate Canterbury’s new mural in our College Chapel of The Good Shepherd, a meaningful addition for our community. This stunning large-scale piece, created by talented local artist Emma Alyce, now graces the rear internal wall of the chapel.

This collaborative project saw Emma working closely with Principal Dan Walker, College Chaplain Father Dan Talbot, and myself, following a design brief I developed, to bring our vision to life. Our goal was to enliven the space, complement the original stained-glass windows, and create a warm, inviting atmosphere for reflection and connection.

Emma has created murals for a wide variety of spaces and businesses, establishing herself as a true entrepreneur in her field. For this piece, she blended the rich symbolism of our College, the surrounding landscape, the chapel’s connection to The Good Shepherd, its distinct Anglican identity, and its unique colour palette. After extensive discussions and careful refinements, the final concept was chosen.

In late 2024, Emma began the intricate process of bringing the mural to life. She first projected the final design onto the chapel wall before layering in rich, detailed brushstrokes over the course of a few weeks.

As part of this journey, our Senior School Visual Art students had the unique opportunity to engage with a professional artist at work – an invaluable experience to deepen their artistic appreciation and nurture their entrepreneurial spirit, preparing them as world ready learners.

Now complete, this beautiful mural offers much to appreciate. At its heart, Jesus stands as the Good Shepherd, watching over the lamb – a symbol of His guidance and care for our community. The backdrop showcases the mountain ranges surrounding our College, reflecting our connection to both faith and place. Subtle golden highlights enhance the artwork, adding warmth and a sense of reverence to this sacred space.

This vibrant mural serves as a reminder of the powerful relationship between our sacred spaces, our Anglican traditions, and the creativity and passion that thrive within our community.

We warmly invite you to visit the chapel, admire this extraordinary mural firsthand, and join us in celebrating the creativity, talent and dedication that brought it to life.

Canterbury’s 38th Foundation Day Celebration | Chapel Service, Principal’s Address & Alumnus of the Year Award

Last Friday, Canterbury came together to celebrate its 38th Foundation Day with a meaningful morning Chapel Service in the Canterbury Events Centre, honouring nearly four decades of growth, excellence, and unity.

Led by College Chaplain Fr Dan Talbot, the Foundation Day Service offered a time for reflection and gratitude, bringing together our whole College community.

As part of this special tradition, we were proud to announce the 2025 Alumnus of the Year: Lieutenant Colonel Andrew Glover (Class of 2001), currently serving as Commander of the Australian Contingent on Operation Mazurka in the Sinai.

We warmly congratulate him on this well-deserved recognition.

A sincere thank you to all special guests who joined us in marking this important occasion, including The Right Reverend Bishop John Roundhill, Bishop of the Southern Region, members of the College Board, our Canterbury Parent Consultative Committee, Alumni and past staff, current staff, parents and students of the College.

On Monday 17 February, the extremely popular Moana Pasifika professional rugby union squad, spent the day training here at Canterbury College – making full use of our campus gym, playing fields, and other sporting facilities.

The team was busily preparing for their big upcoming clash against the Queensland Reds this Friday evening at Suncorp Stadium.

During the lunch break, our Senior School students had the pleasure of meeting some of the players, getting some autographs, and even shooting some hoops!

Moana Pasifika is a professional rugby union team made up of players from various Pacific Island nations, as well as New Zealand or Australian-born players of Pasifika heritage – including Fiji, Samoa, Tonga and the Cook Islands who play in the Super Rugby Pacific competition.

A BIG ‘Thank You' to Moana Pasifika for spending their day with us here at Canterbury.

We wish them the best in their upcoming clash against the Queensland Reds.

2025 Annual Canterbury St John’s Cathedral City Service | Event Wrap & Photo Gallery

2025 Annual Canterbury St John’s Cathedral City Service | Event Wrap & Photo Gallery

On Tuesday 4 February, our Years 6-12 students were all bussed into Brisbane’s CBD for our Annual Canterbury College St John’s Anglican Cathedral City Service.

It was a special time for school unity, personal reflection and gratitude, as we celebrated our shared values, while deepening our College’s connection to Brisbane’s ‘mother church’ for all Anglicans in our region.

Continuing the wonderful tradition established in 2024, this major event included our Senior Ties and Year 7 House Badges Presentation Ceremonies, alongside the traditional lighting of the College Candle – symbolising the Spirit of God and Light of Christ within all of us.

The Right Reverend Bishop John Roundhill joined our College Chaplain Father Dan Talbot to bless our Year 7 students’ House Badges and Year 12 students’ Senior Ties – marking a key milestone in their educational journey.

In return, the 2025 Seniors pledged to be campus leaders, to pursue excellence, and to uphold the College’s values and standards in word and action.

New Canterbury staff that commenced with the College over the last 12 months were blessed, and the congregation joined in prayer for the beginning of the school year, before being blessed as a whole group.

Bishop Roundhill’s homily focussed on our changing attitudes and tastes through life and how we don’t need to be stuck in old ways of thinking and acting which don’t serve us well anymore.

The Bible Reading and Holy Gospel both referred to building solid and careful foundations in our lives to better withstand life’s ongoing challenges.

As part of this important day, our Year 6s enjoyed a Cathedral Tour led by Father Dan, exploring its rich history and admiring its intricate stained-glass windows and grand stone architecture.

Thank you to all the wider Canterbury Community members who joined us for this memorable Cathedral service and occasion – especially the parents, carers and non-Canterbury siblings.

Using AI In Year 8 Science: Particle Theory & Phase Changes | Mr James Jenkins

Using AI In Year 8 Science: Particle Theory & Phase Changes | Mr James Jenkins

On Friday, my Year 8 Science Class was reviewing particle theory and phase changes.

And I wanted an interactive digital simulation to use alongside the physical demonstration.

I love how easy it has become to work with Microsoft’s Copilot AI to create customised HTML-based tools for learning.

My first short prompt almost got me what I needed, but I didn't have it quite right.

I then uploaded an image to show how I wanted the transitions to look, which it understood perfectly.

The next iteration was spot on!

Particle Theory: This theory explains that all matter is made up of tiny particles that are in constant motion and interact with each other.

Phase Changes: These are physical transformations of matter (such as melting, freezing, evaporation, and condensation) that occur when energy is added or removed, causing particles to rearrange.
