2024 QLD Secondary Schools Cup: Tennis State Finals Team Championships | Canterbury Wins Bronze Medal Representing South Coast Region

Our girls did us proud last week up in Rockhampton – home of Australian tennis icon ‘Rocket’ Rod Laver, in the 2024 QSSTT State Finals, where we finished third overall.

Representing our South Coast Region, we narrowly missed out on gold and silver by just a few games in a closely contested semi-final against Kelvin Grove SHS, who were representing the Metro North Region.

On the first day’s Pool A play-offs, we beat Somerville House, Shalom College and Sunshine Coast Grammar School, dropping just five games across 18 matches – a dominating performance.

Valenova was undefeated during the whole competition as the No.1 seed, winning all her singles and doubles matches.

Our other team members Katie, Isabella, Maddison and Mckynlee all played superbly throughout the two days, in very hot and gruelling Central Queensland conditions.

One highlight was meeting Mr Rob Barty – the father of Aussie tennis superstar Ash Barty, who is a big supporter of this event.

Overall, I think we performed really well, placing as the third best school for girls tennis throughout all of Queensland.

Especially when Queensland is regarded as a tennis ‘power state’.

We will strive to get stronger, faster and more accurate in the coming years.

Special thanks to Dan Bolger, Brock Franklin and Perran Sonnex for their dedication and support as Assistant Team Managers for the trip.

We have our Primary Schools Tennis Cup coming up this Term 4 on Friday 25 October on the Gold Coast and we have our teams ready to compete.
